The Klingons with cranial ridges first appeared in Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1979.
Love ‘em or hate ‘em, the Klingons have always been a mainstay villain in Star Trek. And while the plot of Star Trek 2 (working title), the sequel to director JJ Abrams’ 2009 Star Trekreboot, is unknown, last night’s MTV Movie Awards offered sharp-eyed television watchers a glimpse of what appears to be a Klingon warrior wearing armor. Check out the image below…
The folks over at TrekMovie.com caught the image during Abrams’ appearance on the program, while HitFix is alleging that the Klingons will, indeed, play a part in the sequel.
That said, the still could be from footage shot for the 2009 movie that didn’t make it onto the Blu-ray release, or this could be is a genuine still of a Klingon from the forthcoming sequel. There’s just no way to confirm for certain.
Of course, the head armor isn’t a complete surprise. Abrams included Klingons in the afore-referenced deleted theatrical scene from the 2009 film, which can be seen on the Blu-ray release.
In either case, judging from the corrugated head armor, Abrams has chosen to stick with the aggressive-looking cranial ridges that first appeared in Star Trek: The Motion Picture back in 1979, and which were popularized in subsequent films and Star Trek: The Next Generation on television.

Klingons as villains in Star Trek 2 would certainly not be unexpected, since they still represent the franchise’s most colorful villains and played no significant role in the 2009 film. Stay tuned on this potentially fascinating new development.
Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho, Anton Yelchin and Bruce Greenwood return for the sequel, with new roles for Benedict Cumberbatch, Alice Eve and Peter Weller.
Written by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof, Star Trek 2 will arrive in theaters on May 17, 2013.
