New 'Highlander' Movie on the Way
'Iron Man' writers, director Justin Lin attached

There can be only one; it’s been the tagline throughout the 'Highlander' movie and television franchise. Unfortunately, for much of that time, the "one" could have referred to the total number of Highlander films that were actually good. Now it appears Summit Entertainment has an opportunity to change that. According to Variety, director Justin Lin and producer Neal Moritz have been hired to revitalize the once-popular science-fiction/fantasy property, which concerns sword-wielding immortals battling one another down through the ages.
The original 1986 Highlander, which starred Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery and Clancy Brown, and was directed by Russell Mulcahy, was a bigger success in Europe than in the United States. Meanwhile, despite retaining the same director and stars as the first film, the futuristic 1991 sequel Highlander 2: The Quickening is considered among the most incomprehensible movies ever made.
'Highlander' actually achieved most of its popularity and longevity through a syndicated television program which aired throughout the '90s. Summit, which acquired the original film’s remake rights from Davis-Panzer Productions in May 2008, is aiming to re-launch 'Highlander' as a film franchise.
Along with getting Lin and Moritz, who teamed up on this summer’s hit Fast and Furious, involved with the project, Summit has hired Iron Man screenwriters Art Marcum and Matt Holloway to write the script.
From the sound of it, the remake resembles the original Highlander; it will center on an immortal Scottish swordsman who must do battle with a bloodthirsty barbarian over something called "the Prize." However, the story will be greatly expanded this time, possibly across several films.
Longtime Highlander producer Peter Davis will return in the same capacity.
Lin’s other film credits include Better Luck Tomorrow, Annapolis, and The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. Moritz and his banner, Original Film, are producing the upcoming Green Hornet movie.
