More 'Corn' to be Harvested
Dimension wants to adapt original story for new film

Don’t stick a pitchfork in Children of the Corn just yet; Dimension Films is looking to do a new adaptation of the original Stephen King short story.Fangoria reports that screenwriter Ehren Kruger has been hired to write the upcoming film. Children of the Corn had previously been adapted, most notably as a 1984 New World film starring Linda Hamilton (The Terminator), which spawned several sequels released direct-to-video by Dimension.
Apparently, Dimension head honcho Bob Weinstein wishes his company had handled the original movie as well. "We felt the New World film was a missed opportunity," he told Variety. "If you read the short story, it’s got such a strong feeling to it and there’s this religious overtone to it as well."
Children of the Corn is set in a fictional Nebraska town, where a demonic entity known as "He Who Walks Behind the Rows" entices the children to ritualistically murder all the adults. The original tale had a much darker ending than the movie, and although Stephen King wrote the original adapted screenplay, it was set aside in favor of a more conventional story featuring additional violence.
Kruger is best known as the screenwriter behind Scream 3, The Ring, The Ring Two and The Brothers Grimm. Some of his films feature darkly-comedic elements, but they're serious for the most part, which is what Dimension is looking for.
"Ehren wants to hit it hard," Weinstein said. "It’s popular in Hollywood to say you’re re-envisioning a project, but a lot of the time they’re just carbon copying the original. We are bringing something new to the story."
