Ryan ReynoldsJust yesterday we reported that Warner Bros. had narrowed down their casting choice for the lead role in Green Lantern to Ryan Reynolds, Justin Timberlake, Jared Leto and Bradley Cooper. Now, The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Canadian actor Reynolds is the studio's top choice for the part, and final negotiations are currently taking place.

You may recall from my earlier piece that I suspected Reynolds would not, in fact, be selected to play Hal Jordan/Green Lantern, due his commitment to star as Deadpool for cross-town rival Marvel.

And I couldn't have been more wrong...though I absolutely couldn't see it going to Justin Timberlake, either, which realistically only left Bradley Cooper (not enough star power nor presence with Jared Leto).

Once the deal is secured, it will make Reynolds the only actor to have played heroes for both Marvel and DC. Recall that Reynolds also played Marvel's vampire hunter Hannibal King in Blade: Trinity.

Green Lantern is actually Reynold's second try at playing a DC Comics hero. A few years ago, he was attached to play The Flash.

Production on Green Lantern is expected to start January 2010, with Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) at the helm.

Screenplay is by Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green for producer Donald DeLine.

The "Green Lantern" was created in 1940 by writer Bill Finger and artist Martin Nodell. Introduced in 1959, Hal Jordan is a second-generation test pilot, an ordinary man who was given the power ring and battery (lantern) by a dying alien named Abin Sur. When Abin Sur's spaceship crashed on Earth, the alien used his ring to seek out an individual to take his place as Green Lantern: someone who was "utterly honest and born without fear."

No question Reynolds has the stature and athleticism for the part, and we have to say we're feeling a little flush with pride for our Vancouver-born son.
