Jane Fonda as Barbarella (1968).Getting a remake of the 1968 film Barbarella off the ground is proving to be a challenge for Universal.

The studio initially abandoned the project, because they didn't feel that Rodriguez's girlfriend Rose McGowan (Grindhouse) had enough star power to carry a big Hollywood production.

Then the budget doubled beyond what the studio had originally planned.

After more negotiations, Universal agreed to a slightly higher budget as long as the film could shoot in Germany, and take advantage of tax breaks over there. Meanwhile, Rodriguez did not want to be away from his family, and so finally decided to pass on Barbarella altogether.

But that's not quite the end of the story, it seems. Moviehole is reporting that Universal and producer Dino De Laurentiis are still pursuing the project without Rodriguez. "[They're] meeting with writers as we speak." said the source. "It's far from dead."

And the saga continues...
