Is 'Caprica' on the Verge of Cancellation?
A source tells CinemaSpy that script problems are plaguing the series

When the announcement came that there would be a Battlestar Galactica spin-off series entitled Caprica — which would chart both the society and the evolution of the Cylons on the titular planet some 50 years before Battlestar — many fans were excited at the possibilities. The pilot, however, never quite seemed to gel for some of us; continuing much of the same dark, philosophical navel-gazing that many felt had marred the first part of Battlestar Galactica's final season.

The announcement last month that Buffy alum James Marsters would be guest-starring as a dangerous terrorist leader by the name of Barnabus Greeley for at least three episodes buoyed anticipation for many, but now it seems as though any optimism may be premature. A trusted industry insider informed CinemaSpy on Saturday that production faces suspension on Caprica due to serious script problems/shortfalls, and that the future of the series may well be in jeopardy. From what we've been told, the producers haven't been altogether happy with the caliber of the stories.

Frankly, this came as a bit of a shock to us. Moreover, we should point out that we've been unable to corroborate the information independently. However, our source is well placed within the Vancouver film production community; in a position to know; and has been 100 percent accurate with information in the past.

If true, we hope this is only a temporary glitch, because we believe that the concept for Caprica is strong, and that the tone of the pilot wasn't necessarily a fair measure by which to judge the tone of a forthcoming series—changes are often commonplace once a show ramps up for production.

Meanwhile, we'll keep you posted on any further developments if and when we get them.

We'd love to hear your thoughts on this. Are you looking forward to Caprica, or had Galactica already left you sated by this universe?

It's not a rumor

JFW:

We've been informed that the show has been having some script delivery issues, non-Olympics related. We've also been informed that it doesn't necessarily threaten the series, just a bit of a slowdown in production.

Espenson is not going to publicly admit this.

We'll have more in the following days...
More stuff about it not being true

it's not true

This rumor has been circulating for a while now...Jane Espenson has squashed this rumor twice already. She is more in the know than your expert, why? because she is one of the head writers of the show...they are working on scripts and are almost through the first season. Per Jane - they are loving the paths that it is taking...do a search for her and you will find it yourself as well. Caprica is coming...SO SAY WE ALL!

Did you know that the Galactica Has been here many thousand years ago. What is the original Human Cylon Jihad about? Why did the crew search for Earth the final 13th colony? Are you a Cylon, or are you a Human Adamus getting ready for the Ascension process. Kara Thrace follows the SUN Signs to find her home planet. Ascension is now. SO SAY WE ALL !

Space Battles

Dear Phil,

With all due respect, we are talking about television not books. It doesn't matter what I've read (which is a lot in the SciFi Genre). I am not even talking about my personal tastes. I am talking about television and what makes for an entertaining show. Pew Pew is necessary for an all around good show. It's just an opinion. Not a challenge to whos more well versed in the SciFi arena. One that I might add is vastly shared by many BSG fans as evidence by the Syfy Channel forums.
Space Battles?

Joe:'Geeks never get tired of space battles. They are necessary for the genre.' I take it you've not read much SF then. The science fiction genre in literature does very well without space battles much of the time.

I'm glad to have series that cover more of the genre's possibilities than is often the case with TV and film.

Jane Espenson is currently writing Caprica's scripts.

From her twitter (sep. 14) : "Caprica moving ahead so fast! Eps nine, ten, eleven, twelve on their way... thirteen taking shape! Season one is gonna be all wrote up!"
More proof...

...they should've done a First Cylon War prequel series. Geeks never get tired of space battles. They are necessary for the genre. Would've rather seen a Young Adama and Saul Tigh doing some special ops instead of 90210 drivel.
Still anticipating the program . . .

I am still anticipating the program.

I do not want to say that this is a good problem to have. Indeed, with production already under way, it is not. However, I am glad that the show's producers do care enough about the quality of their product to identify script quality as an issue and to address this matter seriously.

What good is a Galactica spin-off if it cannot approach that show's quality?

So long as this is only a temporary glitch, I am actually happy to hear this news. It means, yes, the show's creators do care and have some pride. That is generally a good sign for we the viewers.
