'Burn Notice' Strikes Right Note for John Dickson
Composer wins second successive ASCAP award for hit USA series

We write about a lot of actors, directors and even producers on CinemaSpy, but it takes many more talents to make a successful (or unsuccessful, for that matter) film and television show. It is with pleasure, then, that we present a news story about a member of the filmmaking profession with a specialism that rarely makes the headlines: composing. Congratulations to composer John Dickson! For the second successive year he has received the ASCAP award for Top Television series for his work on one of our favourite shows, the USA Network hit Burn Notice.ASCAP - the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers - represents over 8.5 million copyrighted musical works from more than 350,000 songwriters, composers and music publishers. The Top Television Series Award is presented to an ASCAP composer who has written themes and underscores for a high rated TV series in the previous year. John Dickson is no stranger to the award, having also received it for Burn Notice in 2008.
"Burn Notice is a really fun show to write for," Dickson said. "From the initial viewing of each episode to the final mix of the score it's always entertaining. Each character is so unique, so well fleshed out, that they inspire me to keep coming up with cool music for them."
Aside from Burn Notice, Dickson's credits include Killer Per Caso, A Galaxy Far Far Away and the films Mammoth, Alien Lockdown, Larva and Pterodactyl. His compositions and arrangements have also featured in Who Killed the Electric Car, XXX, Cool World, The Oprah Winfrey Show, General Hospital and many other television and film projects. In addition he has performed with singers such as Barbra Streisand, Elton John, and Ray Charles.
Burn Notice is due to begin a third season on USA on Thursday, June 4 at 9/8C.
"It's great to be back at work with [creator and executive producer] Matt Nix and the Burn Notice team," Dickson says. "The show just gets better and better."
Dickson is also working on music for Miss Nobody, a feature film directed by Tim Cox, who helmed Mammoth, Alien Lockdown and Larva. Samples of Dickson's music can be heard on his website.
