Reuters -- Oprah's entertainment empire, including O - THE OPRAH WINFREY MAGAZINE and a satellite radio program, is set to explode with a network that taps the medium she has dominated for many years — television. The talk show entrepreneur will create a cable network with Discovery Communications, to be called OWN, saying she would soon consider the future of the top-rated weekday television show that has made her a household name.
According to Reuters, the multi-talented TV, print and film star is looking ahead to the expiration of her current contract with ABC, who distribute her hit show.
She said in a conference call to announce the deal, "One day the show has to end. That may be in 2011 and it may be after 2011." Her distribution deal is set to expire in May 2011, but discussion to end the show could surface in 2010.
In 2009, expect to see OWN in the spot currently occupied by Discovery Health Channel.
The network expects to reach more that 70 million homes in the US.
