The Eye rescues ‘Medium’ but stays the course otherwise

In New York this morning, CBS released its schedule to advertisers. CBS had less work to do with its Fall 2009 schedule. And, comfortable atop the ratings, the Eye didn’t mess around with what wasn’t broken.

The big news was that the network has picked up Medium, which was cancelled by NBC just yesterday. Produced by sister company CBC Television Studios, it was a simple decision for the broadcast network to pick up the supernatural series that stars Patricia Arquette.

As expected, and as is logical, Medium will be paired with the thematically-similar Ghost Whisperer on Friday nights.

Other than that, CBS’s fall schedule is largely business as usual, anchored by sitcoms and procedurals.

The only new comedy, Accidentally on Purpose brings Jenna Elfman back to your television as a movie critic who gets pregnant. Accidentally, of course. It will air in the Monday comedy block between How I Met Your Mother and Two and a Half Men.

Rules of Engagement will be back midseason.

Three new dramas are being added to the CBS schedule for the fall. The Good Wife stars Julianna Margulies as the wife of a politician who returns to her former life as a defense attorney after her politician husband lands in jail; NCIS: Los Angeles, a spinoff of the forensic procedural starring LL Cool J and Chris O’Donnell; and, Three Rivers, which stars Alex O’Loughlin (Moonlight) as a doctor leading an organ transplant team.

Coming to CBS in midseason are two additional dramas. Miami Trauma, from Jerry Bruckheimer, about the lives of a team of expert trauma surgeons, and The Bridge, a co-production with Canadian network CTV, which stars Aaron Douglas (Battlestar Galactica) as a street cop who becomes the head of the police union.

Flashpoint, another joint CTV-CBS production about a tactical police squad, will return to the CBS in summer 2010.

Eleventh Hour, The Unit and Without a Trace have been cancelled.

The CBS fall lineup is as follows:

Glad they picked this one up for another season, too. It's the best procedural on TV

Three cheers for CBS for saving Medium. Yippee! A network with good sense. Who would have thought :)
