Remote View: Farewell To 'Eastwick's' Lovelies
Spend some time with the cancelled dramedy while you can

Here's hoping that Lindsay Price, Rebecca Romijn and Jaime Ray Newman land some juicy comedic roles now that 'Eastwick' has been cancelled. It was probably the right decision to cancel Eastwick.

I feel bad about saying that, because the acting in the series is downright incredible, but there's just something lame about the show. I don't know what it is — the plot? or the lack thereof? — but despite the laugh-out-loud moments, I found myself cringing too.

But don't ignore the show just because it's finished. In fact, with all the other programs going into winter hiatus, and ABC burning off episodes, now is a great time to catch an episode or two.

The series is based on the John Updike novel The Witches of Eastwick, which was previously adapted into a film starring Jack Nicholson, Michelle Pfeiffer, Cher, and Susan Sarandon.

Eastwick, the series, is much different from that film. Plot and character were taking too long to evolve, I suspect.

I'm not joking when I say that some of the best acting on television this fall came on this show. And it came consistently from the three leads, Jaime Ray Newman, Lindsay Price and Rebecca Romijn.

By way of example, take this line from last week's episode, "Paint and Pleasure": "You can't pretend I'm not here. I'm not Sasquatch."

I'm still laughing over that one.

The funny lines are well distributed, too. All the cast get a chance to bring the funny, including supporting actors like Sara Rue, who plays Penny Higgins, best friend to Price's Joanna Frankel.

And Paul Gross continues to compel. It's hard to take your eyes off him when he's on screen, and he makes that happen without needing to be extravagant. While Eastwick might be finished, I sure hope a canny producer picks him up for something else. He does great work on many independent productions, but he needs to be seen by more people.

So if you've got a hole in your schedule, consider watching an episode of Eastwick. You might find that you're pleasantly surprised, and you might discover an actor to watch for.
