They say truth is stranger than fiction, and indeed, whomever "they" are, their axiom certainly holds true in the case of this next story. It seems Fringe co-producer/writer Brad Caleb Kane intends to write a movie based on the ubiquitous View-Master toy, which first appeared on the market in 1939.

Kane announced on his Twitter account that after he's done penning the sci-fi action-adventure Uprising for director Wolfgang Petersen and Columbia Pictures, he will take on the View-Master project for DreamWorks Pictures.

According to Kane, the studio has already signed Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (Star Trek, Transformers) to produce. Apparently the plot will be "like the old 80's Amblin movies: Goonies, Young Sherlock... In that vein."
More Info
The View-Master is a device for viewing seven 3-D images (also called stereo images) on a paper disk. Although the View-Master is now considered a children's toy, it was originally marketed as a way for viewers to enjoy stereograms of colorful and picturesque tourist attractions.

Many of us remember the View-Master toy and how cool it was to look through and see static '3-D' images of scenes from our favorite films and TV shows (yours truly had a classic Star Trek episode "The Omega Glory" on View-Master)—with the actors looking almost like wax figures.

That said, I cannot even begin to imagine how such a toy can be spun off into a movie that's even halfway interesting...but it does beg the question: what's next? A series of films based upon Black & Decker power tools? Maybe a movie about someone who gets sucked into his or her iPhone (actually, that's not too far off reality—call me, Michael Bay).

Meanwhile, you can learn more about the View-Master by visiting Fisher-Price's official site.
