Stallone, Schwarzenegger and Willis' 'Expendables' Scene Explained
Sounds like an '80s action dream scene
By Robert Falconer | Monday, November 2, 2009
Last Saturday, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone and Bruce Willis shot a church scene for Stallone's The Expendables action ensemble pic, marking the first time that the three '80s action stars have appeared together on the silver screen. Meanwhile, Entertainment Weekly subsequently chatted with Stallone about the scene(s), who enthusiastically revealed a bit about what we can all expect.*Spoiler Alert*
"Bruce says 'Well, there's one other person I want to talk to before I hire you," said Stallone. "And then Arnold, who plays my old rival, walks in. We have a history together. And we go back and forth and I tell him that I should have shot him a long time ago when I had the chance. Then it goes on from there. And here we are, the three of us trying to man up to one another, playing off of who we are, using our baggage in this one scene."
Stallone told EW that big scene with Willis, Schwarzenegger, and himself would amount to more than a cameo or a stunt in the final cut of the film. "It’s probably going to be about 5 minutes of screen time. "We only had them for that one day and then Bruce had to go off to Istanbul and Arnold had to go back and do his governmental stuff," Stallone said. "But I was impressed because they got up at 5:30 in the morning to do this."
At five minutes, that translates to about five pages of script...which, if the film runs around 90 minutes, is definitely more than a cameo sequence. For many fans of '80s action films, that five minutes alone may be worth the price of admission.
