Gremlins Out, Goonies In?
Spielberg denies 'Gremlins' reboot, considers 'Goonies' sequel

Two stalwarts of '80s cinematic pop culture have been in and out of the news over the past couple of years — Gremlins and The Goonies — with resurrections of both rumored and oft-discussed. Joe Dante has indicated a desire to reboot Gremlins, the franchise he originally helmed with the original film back in 1984, and the sequel in 1990; meanwhile, we've been hearing about a Goonies remake for some while that would focus on the kids of the original characters. So what's up with both franchises? According to ComingSoon and io9, there are no currently no plans for the first, but the latter is under real consideration.
Writer Chris Columbus and producer Steven Spielberg have no knowledge of any Gremlins projects. "I spoke to Steven Spielberg a couple days ago and said, 'You know, I've been reading on the internet about this 'Gremlins 3D' and no one's approached him either, so I don't know if that's really true," Columbus told ComingSoon during a press junket for Percy Jackson and the Olympians. "Maybe it's going on behind our backs."
Columbus was quick to add, however, "It would be fun to go back and revisit them."
Naturally, a Gremlins reboot wouldn't be going on behind Spielberg's back, so this sounds like a case of a theoretical willingness to revisit Gremlins by all parties, but with no serious plans yet afoot.
And if Gremlins were to be revisited…how would today's technology impact on the property? If Columbus has anything to say about it, it certainly wouldn't depend upon CGI. "Something like 'Gremlins,' which is a movie I really like, I think it's impossible to recreate in a CGI environment," Columbus continued. "I think it will inevitably lose some of its charm. Those are edgy Muppets in a sense and you don't want to lose that sense of anarchy that those gremlins had, because behind the scenes are 25 puppeteers making them to come to life."
A Goonies sequel may have a slightly better shot at reaching a multiplex near you, however. Columbus confirmed that he and Steven Spielberg have been working on ideas.
"I'd love to see another Goonies movie out there," Columbus told io9. "The kids would have to be the parents, and their kids would be the Goonies. We just need something, as Steven [Spielberg] said the other day, he said, 'How do you beat finding an entire pirate ship filled with treasure underground? What can be as exciting?' So we have to come up with something that can be equally as exciting. What can be the next adventure?"
So far, Columbus hasn't sorted that out. "I'm not working on it," he said. "Everybody is coming to me asking if I have an idea—but no, not yet."
And so we continue to wait...
