The Canadian science fiction thriller Swamp Devil has won its second award on the American film festival circuit in just a few weeks. The made-for-TV film, which stars Bruce Dern, was awarded the Platinum Remi Award for Best Direction in a Television or Cable Production at the Houston International Film Festival in April. Since then, it has won Best Foreign Feature at Hawaii's Big Island Film Festival, which took place from May 15 to 18. The film's director, David Winning, also received a special Career Award in Hawaii.

"Swamp Devil was one of those rare magic movie moments where a lot of creative elements came together perfectly," Winning says in a press release. "With a strong script, a talented cast, and a hard working crew, we created a great, creepy monster flick. I’m very proud."

Swamp Devil is a production of Montreal-based company Muse Entertainment Enterprises. It premiered on the Canadian cable station Super Channel back in April. It is described by Muse as "an eerie tale of magic and revenge set in a small town whose nearby swamp is the scene of a series of gristly murders." Dern plays Howard Blaime, the town's ex-sheriff who is accused of the murders. He must prove that the Swamp Devil really exists in order to clear his name.

In addition to Dern, the cast includes Cindy Sampson (The Last Kiss, Proof of Lies), Nicolas Wright (Tipping Point, The Business), James Kidnie (Stargate SG-1, Earth: Final Conflict) and Allison Graham (Stargate Atlantis, Rumours).

Calgary-born director native David Winning is no stranger to horror and science fiction television; his resume includes episodes of the Friday the 13th, Are You Afraid of the Dark, Earth: Final Conflict, Dinotopia, Stargate: Atlantis, and Andromeda. The Career Award he was given in Hawaii was in recognition of the many other honours he has received, including Gold Plaques for Special Achievement in Direction at the Chicago International Film Festival for episodes of Twice in a Lifetime, Earth: Final Conflict and Andromeda and Silver Plaques for his work on Stargate Atlantis, Dinosapian, Something Beneath, Naturally, Sadie, Andromeda, He Sees When You're Sleeping and Friday the 13th.

Swamp Devil
was produced by Irene Litinsky (Human Trafficking, The Wool Cap) and Ric Nish (Durham County, The Fountain). The script is by Ethlie Ann Vare (Andromeda, Black Swarm) and Gary L. Dauberman (BloodMonkey). Michael Prupas (The Wind in the Willows, Human Trafficking), Robert Halmi, Sr. (Lion in the Winter, The Ten Commandments) and Robert Halmi, Jr. (Lonesome Dove, The Christmas Card) were executive producers.
