Exclusive: Is Chris Pine Captain America?
An alleged insider tells CinemaSpy he's on the short list
By Robert Falconer | Friday, February 12, 2010
Yesterday afternoon, CinemaSpy received an email from a tipster claiming to be well-connected within the Paramount hierarchy, and alleging that they had info about the casting of the lead for The First Avenger: Captain America. Now, typically when we get this sort of stuff (not that we get it a lot, mind you) and the info is as big a story as this one, our BS meters start to sound off. We're not trying to engage in false self-deprecation here — we have some great sources, but most of them are in Hollywood North, not Hollywood Central Casting — but our first thought is, "Why are you telling anyone this?" Our second thought is, "Why are you telling us this?"
Frankly, we sat on this info for a while, trying to decide whether or not to write it up, and knowing full well that it would be near impossible to verify independently. However, on the off-chance that this individual really does have accurate intel, we decided to run with it, but only after first adding the VERY large caveat that it's uncorroborated.
Here's what we were told:
Anyway, just thought you guys might like to know that Paramount and Marvel are pretty close to closing a deal on casting Steve Rogers/Captain America and fans might be excited to learn that the short list includes somebody a lot of fans speculated about, Chris Pine. From what I'm hearing, he's the frontrunner right now, though that could change. Can't tell you who the other couple of choices are, cause that'll work against me for reasons I don't want to get into.
Anyway, hope this is helpful, feel free to do what you want with it.
So, once again, since we have no way to authenticate this tip, nor any way to genuinely verify the claim, we're going to file it as "not ready for primetime," even though we're presenting it here for you to digest and discuss, just in the event that the person is actually reputable. Because stranger things have happened, and you just never know.
Looking at IMDB Pro, there does seem to be a window in Pine's film schedule right now. Unstoppable is in post production, and The Art of Making Money is still in development. Star Trek and the next Jack Ryan film are merely in the scripting phase and not due till 2012, so the timing seems as though it might support this information.
Chris Pine as Captain America? His age is right, and if he bulked up (we're guessing he easily could), he might actually make a good choice to play Steve Rogers, aka Captain America.
What say you to this tidbit of info? Do you think we're being punked? Is Pine a good choice for the role? Would you prefer someone else play Captain America? Sound off below...

A third Pinechise?

Pine is already Kirk and Jack Ryan, isn't he? It's hard to believe he'd get cast as a third franchise character. I think he'd be great, but buy it I do not.

Interesting rumor. I think Chris Pine would do well with the role. He was great as Kirk. But I'm actually hoping that other rumor is true and Jensen Ackles from Supernatural is being considered. I think he would be fantastic as the Cap. Of course if season 6 of Supernatural happens, I doubt it could happen but it's a nice thought.

With regards to your first remark, I would encourage you to reacquaint yourself with the definition of "exclusive." Exclusive means "excluding or not admitting other things," it doesn't speak to whether or not something is factually correct or not. I used exclusive because to my knowledge no one else was sent this email "tip."
I need to point out that during one instance in the past I received an email tip about something that I was CERTAIN was BS, and the tipster turned out to be dead accurate.
The moral of the story is that you just never know, and I was very careful to express my own doubts about this info.
With regards to your second remark, knock yourself out.

Why did you put "Exclusive" in the title, then?

This is called hit-whoring. You've weakly protected yourself by explaining this as a complete BS rumor then you throw up an article titled exclusive.
In my next post, I'm writing awful things about this site.

Is yet to be considered a major actor although he has plyed Kirk little else is known about him and if it's true that he is the second coming of Brad Pitt/Robert Redford then he still has a long ways to go! I say YES to Chris Pine for sure!

I'm not sure that confirms it as a false rumor, but I actually hope it IS a false rumor and that you're right.
Johnston's instinct to cast an unknown - much as Donner did with Chris Reeve for Superman back in the day - is the way to go, IMO.
Trouble is, in this day and age, they seem to have gone back to casting star talent for hero vehicles...and I expect the studios and what they see as "bankable" A-listers has a lot to do with that.
Ultimately, it won't be Johnston's decision, it'll be Paramount/Marvel's.

The director has already gone on record saying that he wants to cast an unknown that hasn't been in any major movies, so this rumor is untrue.
The source is SciFiWire, but he said this in a press conference for Wolfman:
"Johnston also revealed other details about his upcoming film: Expect a casting announcement no later than March 1. And expect an unknown. "I hope it'll be somebody that we discover and who's never been in ... —he's probably been in something, but you won't know who he is. You won't recognize him, and we'll surround him with more prominent names. That's who we're looking for. Will we find him? I don't know. It's tough.""

I could definitely see it, but at the same time I doubt it. Shouldn't Cap be taller, too?
