'Creature From the Black Lagoon' Gets New Director
As Universal starts over with a new story

Universal's gestating remake of Creature from the Black Lagoon has tapped a new director to replace the outgoing Breck Eisner. And while many wondered if the reborn story of the Gill-Man would languish indefinitely, it turns out he'll probably be back to terrorize audiences once again (one way or another).

Carl Eric Rinsch, the commercials director, who was once a contender to direct the Alien prequel, and who recently signed on to direct the samurai adventure 47 Ronin for Universal, is in talks to shepherd Black Lagoon for the studio.

Gary Ross penned the script for the story that concerns a mythic monster who dwells in the Amazon, but the studio has reportedly gone back to the drawing board with the script; starting over entirely.

It almost seems as though within the onslaught of remakes headed our way, there's a bevy of sub-genres being reimagined as well. A good example is Universal's return to its classic horror properties. The studio will release The Wolfman with Benicio Del Toro on February 12, and, as we've previously reported, is also developing an updated version of Bride of Frankenstein.

Tell us, are you looking forward to this bumper crop of revisited classics?

The Essence of Charm. Only found in the ‘original box.’

Now to answer your question, Robert, am I looking forward to this bumper crop of revisited classics. No. Because the original films as you correctly called them, were classics. And because they delivered the intrinsic value of 'charm' (the bewitching curiosity to explain and understand the unknown), to reproduce this in my own imagination now, would only come from something totally new and never seen before. Ah...that's where Hollywood needs to go with their money. Give us some charm out of a new, ‘unopened box.'
The Creature waits for a 2016 Summer Olympics release.

Lucas, Spielberg, Cameron and Pee Wee Herman, waited years for the technology to arrive which could bring their imaginative stories to life on the silver screen. I suggest that Universal keep the Creature in the holding tank for a few more years until the technology arrives where: 1)The movie audience can be 'spritzed' with Amazon-scented Perrier from a spigot in the seat back chair in front of them. 2)And in their own seat back, a ‘scratcher’ to give a goosing when the Creature’s claw rips the Gucci lawyer representing PETA and the unfortunate WWE Raw wrestler who answered the ambiguous ad: "Training partner needed for aspiring aquatic mud wrestling phenom."

And don’t forget the 2016 Olympic Synchronized Swimming Team that also gets the ‘claw’ when they too answer an ad: “Rio de Janeiro company needs attractive female swimmers for Amazon dinner cruises. Apply in person. No phone calls please."
