It’s official, probably: Wes Craven is returning to the 'Scream' franchise.

Since January, it’s been rumored the legendary director of Scream 1-3 was in negotiations for Scream 4. Craven, who directed Scream 3 back in 2000, more recently helmed the thriller Red Eye, and had a writer’s credit in the 2007 The Hills Have Eyes 2 (which was not exactly a remake of the 1985 film of the same name, which Craven directed).

The 70-year-old auteur was rumored to be involved with Scream 4 in some capacity, but was not necessarily going to be hopping back into the director’s chair. However, according to CinemaBlend, reliable sources have said indicated that Craven will be helming the sequel for the Weinsteins.

Kevin Williamson, who wrote the first and second 'Scream' movies, is serving as writer again. Meanwhile, original 'Scream' trilogy cast members David Arquette, Courteney Cox and Neve Campbell will also be returning in some capacity, but Campbell’s role may not be particularly big. Perhaps Craven will showcase her prominently in the advertising for the film, then kill her character off in the first act, thereby creating suspense. Nah, that would never work.
