Actor shoots down rumors Nero's baldness caused production delays

It looks Nero won’t be pulling a Spock and coming back from the grave after seemingly dying in the recent Star Trek.

"Unfortunately, no, I don't think so," actor Eric Bana, who played Nero, said during a Funny People interview over the weekend. "It was a one-shot deal. I had a great time.”

But science fiction fans will be able to catch Bana in The Time Traveler's Wife, adapted from Audrey Niffenegger’s novel about a woman whose husband becomes unstuck in time.

It had been reported that The Time Traveler's Wife was delayed so Bana could re-grow his hair, which he shaved to play Nero. Bana, however, told SCI FI Wire the production was never behind schedule, and the movie was not supposed to come out earlier.

"The film was still finished at its original date, so it really didn't have anything to do with it.," he said about the rumor. "I was bald for Star Trek, so we had a couple things that we still had to shoot, and it didn't really matter. So I just thought, 'Why not wait for me to grow it if you don't need it [earlier] anyway, rather than wearing a wig, basically?' It didn't have any effect on the film or the release date."

Bana, meanwhile, said the biggest challenge was making the role of Henry DeTamble, who has a genetic disorder that makes him constantly disappear and reappear in time, both his own as well as faithful to the source material.

He credited co-star Rachel McAdams, who plays DeTamble’s long-suffering wife, and director Robert Schwentke (Flightplan) for helping guide his performance.

"You've got to honor where it comes from, but, at the same time, you have to be careful not to treat them with too much reverence and try to make them your own at the same time," Bana said about playing DeTamble. "So I guess that's always the tricky thing in the balance. But I felt like I was in great hands, in between Robert and Rachel, two fantastic people to work with, who really understood the source material. Yeah, I had a great time, and I love the film."

The Time Traveler's Wife opens August 14. Bana's comments about future involvement in a Star Trek sequel can be found in their entirety here.
