Why One 'Stargate' Fan Has Stopped Watching 'Stargate Universe'
A regrettable farewell to the latest installment in one of my favorite franchises

I am sorry to say that "Life" will probably be the last Stargate Universe episode that I watch. Like several members of CinemaSpy's staff, I am an admirer of the Stargate franchise. My enthusiasm for Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis has reminded me of the excitement with which I greeted new episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation 20 years ago. For this reason I enthusiastically contributed to the coverage of Stargate Universe before and just after its premiere. When I was on Syfy's recent press tour of the SGU sets a few weeks ago I was struck by the rapport, openness and optimism displayed by the cast and crew. Their infectious enthusiasm was more than merely an act for the media. Unfortunately, it won't be enough to keep me watching their show.

I think part of the problem I have with Stargate Universe comes from the concept. Call me an unimaginative traditionalist, but I like space operas that have a sense of fun. The Chicago Tribune's Maureen Ryan crossed swords with SGU co-creator Brad Wright early in the season after she described the show as "gloomy" and "underwhelming" (see here).  She added that the series "seems to have ditched many of the elements that the previous Stargate shows had, notably camaraderie and a sense of adventure, without adding much in the way of narrative suspense or complexity." Although I gave the show longer than she did before criticizing it, I reluctantly echo her words.

Robert Carlyle is excellent as the unloved Dr. Rush. The concept underlying Stargate Universe is deliberately downbeat and it does nothing to inspire me. None of the characters on the Destiny (with the possible exception of the excellent Robert Carlyle's Dr. Nicholas Rush) wants to be there. Therefore, no-one on the ship feels the thrill of exploration. There's no mission, no objective and not much hope. Most of the characters are showing visible signs of being tired of their predicament. I know how they feel.

Star Trek
and previous Stargate series used exploration as an excuse to present stories that made extraterrestrial cultures reflect our quirks and foibles. They also gave us clichéd, comic book heroics. Together these qualities made those shows stimulating and entertaining. SGU creators Wright and Robert Cooper have tried to jettison the cheesiness associated with old school space operas in favour of steering Destiny closer to reality. They are to be applauded for the intent and they have been partially successful. Unfortunately for this viewer, though, their success has come at a price.

Much of what entertains me doesn't aspire to be realistic. Many moviegoers share this attitude if the success of Star Trek is any indication (indeed, one of that film's failings was that it didn't borrow enough from reality). I don't find that surprising. If reality were that exciting, we wouldn't need escapism. It is no coincidence that most popular movies tend to be in the sci-fi genre. That's not true of television, of course, where so-called reality shows and soap operas are ratings winners and science fiction is largely relegated to cable. It is perhaps inevitable that there should be a movement to blend sci-fi and melodrama (consider Defying Gravity). It is also a shame. Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis may have been fantastical, but the best episodes were still emotional, thought-provoking and clever.  I don't feel like I've seen an episode of SGU yet that can match those intellectual and emotional treats. The scripts have so far failed to get me thinking, despite the opportunities embedded in them.
Part of the problem I have with 'Stargate Universe' comes from the concept. Call me an unimaginative traditionalist, but I like space operas that have a sense of fun.

It may be because Stargate Universe's principal characters are reluctantly stuck on a ship they can't steer that they seem to lack any sense of purpose. To the extent to which they are motivated, most seem to be bitter, bored, self-interested or suspicious. Camile Wray (played by Ming-Na) is a case in point. We are almost halfway through the first season and we have barely seen her. She could be killed off next week and I wouldn't miss her character. Early in the series she was assigned a role on Destiny that she has never visibly fulfilled and her major contribution so far has been clandestine conversations with a suspicious-looking official concerning a project that we know nothing about. In "Life" she did get time to visit her lesbian lover on Earth but that added nothing new to her character.

As it stands, I don't much care about any of Stargate Universe's characters and I don't feel like I know them any better than I did after the series premiere. Perhaps because I tend to root for the underdog, it is Rush who has earned my strongest support. That's ironic because he is the lead character who appears on the surface to be the least deserving of it. What is frustrating, though, is that the writers have so far missed the opportunity to take Rush's role as the show's ostensible villain and turn it on its head. He is the most pragmatic of the people on Destiny and were it not for him they would probably have all been dead long ago. Yet neither his shipmates nor the audience are given any encouragement to see him as anything other than an untrustworthy loner.

Louis Ferreira is a fine actor and his character should be doing much more than pleading for his wife's forgiveness. As the putative leader of the Destiny's 'crew', Colonel Everett Young (Louis Ferreira) should also be a standout character. Instead of providing dramatic thrust, though, Young spends too much time bitching about Rush. Either that or he is back on Earth pleading with his estranged wife. To make matters worse, Young and Lou Diamond Phillips' character, Colonel Telford, have now come to blows because the latter is up to something with Young's wife. I watch Stargate for science fiction. To me, this isn't it. It's soap opera. It is also a waste of one of the series' most intriguing elements: the alien stones that are used to get characters back to Earth. But it is typical of the kinds of situations they have been used for (I hesitate to mention the sequence in which two characters spend time in a nightclub and then go home bemoaning their sad love lives).

Of the other characters, Eli Wallace (David Blue) started off looking like he would be an appealing link to lighter Stargate series gone by. He too, though, has failed to live up to his promise. His jokes consist almost entirely of film references and like several other characters, he hasn't been involved enough to become interesting as a person.

The irony of my decision to drop Stargate Universe from my viewing schedule is that it will free up time to watch Stargate Atlantis and SG-1. I am a relative latecomer to the franchise and still have some seasons to catch up on. I love the characters, I love the humour and the best scripts provide clever, thought-provoking escapism. Scripts with these qualities may still come to SGU, of course. With Wright and Cooper in charge, excellent production design and visual effects and a cast that is at least ebullient off camera, the show has great potential. I need a compelling reason to keep watching, though, in the hope that it will be realized. I'm open to persuasion.

if you won't cancel SGU, change the premise

The only SGU story-line that wasn't pure crap was when they explored that beautiful planet with that strange, 2km high tower on it.

They should AT LEAST have let most of the crew stay on that wonderful, amazing planet that was chock full of potential and mystery! After all, a large percentage of the crew WANTED to stay (the first sensible decision most of them have made so far).

At the very least, they could have alternated episodes between "on the ship" and "on the planet". I can guarantee "on the planet in an entire star system manufactured recently" has infinitely more potential.

But what did they do? They left a few "less featured actors" on the planet and continued on with their TOTAL LOSER premise.

But these morons have lost any clue of "what works" and "what captures the imagination of an audience".

Just imagine what unfreaking-believable wonders they might find on a planet with that tower (which is still unexplored). Just imagine what other wonders might be found on a planet built by beings who can literally "create solar systems (stars, planets, etc)".

The stumbled over a gold mine, and simply ignored it. Holy freaking cow.

If you producers, directors and writers read these forums (pretty depressing, I'm sure), at least CONSIDER this idea. NOTHING you have done yet stops you from writing episodes that take place on that planet. Once you do that, you can [finally] let your sci-fi imaginations run wild - and DITCH the stupidity, banality, and soap opera.
SGU: Fail

I tried. I watched, waited, followed patiently. No payoff. The show is just not good.

Those communication stones: I got tired very quickly of watching people go to earth, and have sex with their boyfriend/girlfriends in a stranger's body. And the boyfriend/girlfriend back on earth never objects.

The characters: Most of them are horrible people that its almost impossible to get invested in. They're not anti-heros. They come across as petty, selfish, insecure, immature and treacherous.

Also, the forced drama on the ship wears out very quickly. Its hard to feel the intensity the actors are trying to convey when they're pointing guns at each other, arguing, or fist fighting, or having lame stare-downs in every episode. I don't blame the actors for that. That's the writers' faults.

If this show wasn't set in space with a SG-related theme, it would be a reality show on VH1.

The season finalle was flat. The Lucians were just as likeable as the crew already on Destiny. And I'm still stuck on the logic flaw of this whole thing: The Lucian Alliance wants to occupy a ship on the other side of the universe, with no way to control it, and no way to get home. Yeah, there's the technology that no one can access but it just sound like a really bad plan for a show that was claimed to be more 'realistic' than its predecessors.

I really tried. I gave it a shot. I'm tuning out. And the ratings have been on a steady downward trend ever since the premier, so most other people are tuning out too.

Why do we watch these ever strange TV shows like SGU, it's the wow factor, at the end of the show we go wooohoo how good was that, we don't disect as is said here we go for the end and how good it felt and if it's really good we strip it down to everything seen and heard.
We know rubbish when it's put up and the first 10 episodes were just that, now it isn't it WooHoo.
Now I went back and watched the first three episodes again today, the stuff missed because of knowing what's like in the future episodes just makes it better. It became "good" again because it became relevant.

Loving it even more every episode beit there are breakaways in the story line to talk about a pregnancy that personally I don't care about, yet.

Positives.
Lighting has been turned up
The last sex scene was in story (but still shouldn't have been there)

Actors
there are less and can now be exciting

Story lines
Developing and still final in each episode

WoW factor
It's growing in so many ways

Depth
It's getting less, it needed less to be more

Stop over thinking this, it's Sci-Fi, it's fun and has aliens that are baddies and some goodies that look like baddies, it's easy and its escapism at its finest. StarGate all rox, bring it on.

All of you whiners, get a clue. This is a new and different Stargate. There are real relationships going on, mental illness, akwardness in the moment - all that kind of stuff most Sci-Fci fans don't bother to pay attention to.

But guess what. It just makes it more real. Look out, but you low brow viewers just might have to wake up and wonder whether the most important part about our future is not which alien gets blasted, but whether we have mental courage, toughness, and resourcefulness to meet the unknown universe.

Give the producers some credit. Andy Mikita knows what he's doing and I give this new show 4 stars."
-----------------------------------------------

Jamie, I think there is plenty of room to legitimately criticize the show without being 'low-brow' or 'whinny'.

First you say that there are things going on with the show that sci-fi fans don't pay attention to. I agree. By that same token if its not going to play the part, then it shouldn't be billed as a sci-fi show. There are dozens of examples of sci-fi shows that managed to build their characters and their relationships, and still have a good enough plot to stimulate the viewers' imaginations. This show doesn't.

Secondly Jamie, are YOU a sci-fi fan? You can us "low-brow", but sci-fi fans tend to be one of the birghter groups of tv viewers. They're the ones who see stuff on Star Trek as a kid and then go to work as adults trying to invent some of those things. We also like escapism. Sci-fi fans don't watch tv for 'reality'. We like to get away fom reality. Maury Povich In Space is NOT escapism.

You want us to give the producers credit. Personally, I feel that credit is EARNED, not given. And SGU's wirters have a very long way to go.

I will give most of the actors some credit though. They're doing the best with the lemons they've been given for characters.

How good have the latest episodes been..The Chair, the planet with buildings and a spider (not some stupid wispy thing that floats away, something to shoot and we SGU fans like shooting things), the story lines, the lack of getting to know the people we don't want to know, the change of getting to know the people we now may like to get to know. Now this is stargate and better than before..Keep it up and thankyou for no stupid sex scenes. This has turned from a zero to plus 10 in 3 episodes. I dare anyone to argue on this if you are actually a SG fan.

Ok, I'll take you up on that. Basically you say that you loved every single aspect of the show. The props, the sfx, the writing.

As for the props, one spider partially hidden in shadows shouldn't be enough to impress anybody. It won't win them any awards. The same goes for the chair. Nothing note-worthy there. The fact that it passes as a fancy Ancient chair on the screen doesn't make it very good. That just makes it a working prop.

As for far as the SFX, that should be expected from a sci-fi show. Not to mention that computer images are very cheap to make, so the only real limit are the creators' imaginations. They're not doing James Cameron-level work here.

When it comes to the way to talk about the writing and getting to know some characters and not getting to know others, I'd like to hear more to understand where you're coming from. We saw a little background on Rush, and Grier. Nothing impressive. A junior high student knows that characters should have stories behind them. So to me it looks like the writers haven't changed a thing. The drama is still forced, the characters are still petty and selfish, and don't even get me started on the episode with the pointless mutiny that was over by the end of the same episode. The whole time I watched it, I kept wondering what are these idiots going to do if they manage to take over the ship? They're still screwed and stuck in the middle of nowhere with no way to get home. There just didn't seem to be any point. Another example of more forced drama.

I think the weakest part of the series is the writing. The premise the show is based on really isn't bad. The problem seems to be how they execute it. You can't just throw a bunch of stuff against the wall, see what sticks, and expect to come out with a winner.

Avid SG1 and SGA fan, watched both from beginning to end more than once. SGU is another monster altogether, not bad---but different. As long as I remember the show is not trying to be SG1 or SGA, I'm fine. If it tried to be SG1, then people would complain the show is trying to be SG1 and the original cast is irreplaceable. SGA's story didn't leave much left to be told, it did begin to become repetitive near the end. One thing that I've learned is that it took SG1 a few years to finally gel, the first seasons were very weak in character development and plagued with plot holes. SGA faired better, but still took a season to really come together. So I'm giving SGU a few seasons before I give my final bid, the story is developing still, it's coming together little by little. (possibly too slowly?) I do like that the show is finally in the 21st century in terms of sexuality, homosexuality, women in power, etc. I don't mind the drama, as the dramatic episodes in both SG1 and SGA were arguably the highest rated as well. Whether we like it or not, that's what people want... (though complain about it once they get it.) After season 2 I'll have a firm opinion, until then I won't be shortsighted and dismiss the series. If I did that with the weak beginnings of SG1 or SGA I would've missed the following wonderful seasons.

People have gone into long diatribes, breaking down this show's issues. So I'll just list a couple of big issues I have with it.

The stones. They really have been used as a cheap plot device. Nothing useful/helpful toward getting them home is ever done with the stones. A smart idea would be transferring Dr. Lee and Carter onto the Destiny so they can work with Rush. Instead we get to watch people go home and have sex scenes with their lovers, INSIDE STRANGERS' BODIES.

Poor writing. It really comes across to me like the actors are trying their best. However they can only do so much with the material they're given to work with. I think the writers went so far over the edge trying to make the show seem real, that they made it look even more ridiculous by trying to make every moment overcharged with forced drama.
admit your mistake, end SGU with style, and move on...
Posted by honestann on January 22nd, 1:06am
As someone who greatly enjoyed and respected the previous Stargate series, I must add my support to the prevailing opinion that Stargate Universe is an unmitigated disaster (which is to say more tactfully, "simply lame"). As someone who understand how difficult it is to create great works (like SG1 and SGA), I understand how much it must hurt for the former "kings of the world" to suffer this experience. But make no mistake, they are skilled enough and objective enough to know when they make a huge mistake, whether they're allowed to admit it or not (of course not).

My suggestion for the writers and producers is the following. Kill off this travesty with style! With style consistent with the series so far. Dream up a story that takes the characters and situations as they are, and make them lead to the likely result --- their stupidity and banality as humans gets them all killed. End of story, end of series, back to work on a worth successor to SG1 and SGA.

They already had a perfect opportunity, but alas production leadtimes made this impossible. But I'll tell you want I mean to help you understand what I mean by "end it with class", and "consistent with the series so far".

The episode that started with the ship heading towards the sun was a perfect opportunity (was that "Light"?). I (and lots of stargate fans) immediately understood "hey, isn't this obvious, this is how the ship powers itself, duh". But none of these morons on the ship did. Which means, the characters are much dumber than average viewers! That is such a terrible formula for the main characters in a sci-fi series!

Anyway, what they should have done is acted in their typically stupid, banal, lame ways, and taken actions that CAUSED the ship to dive into the star and burn up. Yes, they should have discovered just before they fried that the ship knew exactly what it was doing (as we all knew), so they and we all understood clearly that "they deserved to die, and they did".

THAT, or some even more classic idea, should be what they do with Stargate Universe. You can be sure [almost] all us fans would cheer you and happily await your next Stargate series.

Time to put that poor injured beast out of its misery... in a classy, appropriate way.
SGU, A fix
Posted by Steve on January 19th, 7:45am
Since Ive watched just about everything si-fi that's been on and since SGU is just terrible I'm currently getting the 1965 "Lost in Space"

How much more entertaining is Dr Smith than SGU total cast and who can forget "Danger will Robinson" this is clasic stuff, the planets look about as real as SGU's well not really lol, the cast is plastic and the lighting is worth a novel of its own, yet, it somehow beats the pants off SGU
It lasted the test of time, SGU lasted 3 weeks and that was for the diehards even though the last episode sparked a little.

Producer Tip
If "they" we the people say it has just a little of BSG in it then don't do it.

Stop indulging yourselves or do it at your peril

You bought the kid in as the "genius" to replace Carter we presume and then give him nothing, look at the two chair episodes it was made for the kid but no you don't go there either.

A bad soldier, der, not in Stargate, ever, or with an excuse but there's one in SGU.

Open ended stories and silly aliens that leaves one thinking if it was again something just stupid.
The sex thing, you guys should have been shot, we get sex anywhere these days and your sex had nothing to do with a descent story just indulging yourselves again..perhaps got a thrill filming it eh.
The fall of the Stargate Franchise
Posted by Spaceman13 on January 7th, 1:53am
They say big people make big mistakes, and this is what happened to the Stargate franchise.

Everywhere we look, from forums, video sites to Amazon reviews, SGU received massive outcry, even affiliated fan sites are finding it hard to contain all the negative responses.

While the producers of SGU publicly stated they don't care about the old fans, going as far as calling old fans "morons" and "idiots", what they were afraid to admit is they needed the old fan base as a crutch just incase people found out how much they sucked. After all, why use the Stargate brand if they didn't need the fan base at all?

What really happened is the producers of SGU have lost the touch, the world changed so much, they look at other shows and wonder why they're not making as much money as well, so they thought it's time to change something, fix something that's not broken.

They didn't have the balls to create something entirely new, so they used the Stargate brand as a blanket, looked at Survivors, American idols, Lost, Greys anatomy, Cloverfield etc, took what they thought was making them popular and combined them base on BSG, a framework they were comfortable working with.

The end result was a gigantic fail, what they ended up producing is exactly what you get when you take everything out of your fridge, blend them into a paste, cook it in microwave then put it in a used Coca Cola cup from McDonalds and call it the new Coke.

Now normally when someone create a pile of crap, people simply ignore it and move on, but what the producers of SGU did, was on top of producing a pile of crap, they also betrayed an established fan base, destroyed an established franchise, and spent more money per episode doing so.

The producers are too insecure to admit it, but anyone with basic business skills knows it was simply a bad business decision. There's simply no excuse.

And it's too late to turn back, the cat is out of the bag and not even Cooper & Wright's massive ego can contain this mess.

Goodbye Stargate.
Truly what were they thinking

The show just sucks the soul out of the viewer. It's tedious a hard watch, boring and down beat. Do they not understand we watch for 'entertainment value'. We have been given a show which is the likeness of the guy at work who you avoid cause he's always bitching about something.

SyFy do everyone a favor can the show and start again. Stargate the concept has so much potential. Maybe just sack the entire production team, install a new group and brief them as follows 'Make Stargate a little more mature but have it entertaining and thought provoking both on moral issues and in terms of technology".

I funded a SG1 & SGA fan site for 7 years. I don't waste the cost of electricity to record SGU.

I guess it have all been said here.
I have stopped watching the show weeks ago - after dragging myself through horror.

Understand me, if anyone is a sci fic fan - I am. Read all that was to read when I was young - seen all I could.

And yes, I have been addicted to soap operas and still can enjoy B-movies, horror.

But there is no way I can enjoy this - sorry - is it so... bad. I can use my time better....

If anything - I refuse to believe that all actors in the series can be that bad - the producer must be incompetent - as well as the story writers ????

If another idiot compares this SGU nonsense with BSG I'm going to cry. BSG may have been gritty and a little darker than your average Scince Fiction show, but it was good, it was enjoyable, and it had characters that you could identify with. I admit that the SGU producers watched BSG and thought "I wish I'd thought of that", and that they set out to achieve something similar, but they failed...drastically. Therefore SGU is nothing whatsoever in this world like BSG. I should add that I don't mind Wright & Cooper wanting to pay a little homage to the great BSG, but let us face it, they cleaerly don't know how to.

I am a huge fan of SG-1, and to a lesser extent SGA, and for those reasons I really tried to like SGU. I even argued in its defence when early dissenters were putting it down. But I couldn't kid myselffor long. SGU just plain sucks. There, I've said it. Literally the only reason I'm watching it is in the vain hope that the producers eat the humble pie and turn the show around with the lighter, more fun elements of the two previous shows. And to do that we need aliens - not district 9 CGI aliens, but humanoid aliens. I won't be holding my breath though, as they have made it quite clear it won't be that kind of Stargate. Such a shame.

I identify with the guy here that said he still watches even though he is not enjoying it...out of a sense of loyalty. That is similar to me. I know that if the ratings get absurd, it will get cancelled....and I can't believe how little some of you know about the TV industry with comments such as "maybe then they'll bring back SGA". No, they won't...and the chances are MGM and SyFy will think the franchise has run its course and that will be the last we hear of Stargate....ever. So I watch it, I hope it gets better, and I do my part to keep the numbers respectable in the hope that they either turn this turkey around, or that another Stargate series gets commissioned and Cooper and Wright go back to doing what they do best - writing good, entertaining, feel good sci-fi.

As take my word for it, just turning your back on the franchise will hammer a nail in its coffin. I appreciate you don't like SGU, at present I don't enjoy it much either, but try and stick it out...that's if you have any desire for the franchise to be around in 5 or 10 years time. Crap reasons to watch a bad show, I know, but I see it as a sense of duty.

Ah... it was with relief I read the review and thought 'that journalist knows his shit', and shit is what they have served us, sadly. Re-christened in my household as "The People Too Stupid to Live", I have stuck with this tedious, depressing, uninspiring show in the hope things would get better but it only got mildly interesting when Rush was abandoned. Then I read they intend to bring in some new aliens, 'similar' to those in "District 9" and I find myself plummeting into despair.

Do the writers no longer have original ideas? Even the much vaunted 'Time' was a simple time paradox, and dealt with in Star Trek a hundred times better - as well as that beloved show having what this idiocy so badly lacks i.e. humour. Pfftt... And yet they renew this crud in favour of the SGA film? There is something very wrong with the world of entertainment indeed.

I am getting a little fed up of the dismissing of critics as disgruntled SGA fans who 'don't get it' - I like stargate, but I'm also a fan of BSG, Lost, and DS9 so it's not like all I want is a cheesy adventure show, this show is just poor in general

The fact is Mallozzi wouldn't be so sensitive about criticism if it was just 'haters' - Stargate has always had it's critics, but it had legions of diehard fans to back it up - they would pounce on the idiots online, now most comment is negative, and it's the proponents who are the minority, and the ratings are dropping - not a good combination

It would appear that the show does nothing for older SG fans, which I guess is fine, but the show isn't going to attract any new fans because it simply isn't good enough, lethal combination if you ask me

The show has potential - it has better acting in particular, but the writing is off - virtually nothing happens to these people and it's not very compelling - dull

After axing prematurly Stargate Atlantis which I loved, this latest depressing and uninspiring flop is a waste of time. What were the writers thinking of with their 'this will be a darker' stargate series. Like the great Alien movies dark can be exciting, but this series is boring big time. Very disappointed.

Let's see. You've got a fan base of about 15 years between SG1 and SGA.
Then you decided to ditch most of them with SGU?

Wow. Great math there fella's.
Did you even read the scripts before you wrote the checks? Perhaps you yourselves never ever watched SG franchise ever before and just heard 'Stargate' during the planning stages?

Well, I'm a fan since the beginning and you've lost me.

Why? Because this show is shit. Don't get me wrong, I've given it a try and watched every crappy episode you've put in front of me, but I, like many other original fans, have limits.

WWGOD? What Would General O'Neill Do? He'd blast this show in the face with a P90, leave you on the other side of the wormhole and have the gate address removed from the dialing computer. That's what we should do with 'SGU'. It is not worthy of the Stargate franchise.

I would rather watch all season of Andromeda.

that's a fairly crappy show but it's better than SGU. Which is sad.
Better stories need to be found and told
Posted by Allen Charles on December 14th, 7:31pm
They are already going to start changing SGU with a new alien coming into the show soon.

I find it rather sad that the writers are so bored with the franchise they can not find a story to tell.

They have this ship that is said to have gone all over the universe planting Stargates and all they can write about is the boring stuff they have done so far. “Time”, did show some imagination and certainly went a better direction than any thing else so far. but nothing else has been worth watching . Getting back to the ship that must have on board (not found yet) a system or method to put Stargates onto new planets. They need to find it and get it working again and then explore the new planets that get seeded with a new stargate. This does not require star ships fighting or some constant enemy but does open up unlimited new stories to tell. To go farther SGU could visit any TV or Movie set (or universe) and then do a guest show episode using the SGU cast and the cast of the other movie or TV show and then promote the movie or other TV show on SGU. The stories are endless and could be really great. This does not have to be every episode of SGU both could happen occasionally over the life of the show. I have not asked the writers to clone SG1 or SGA into SGU but to just tell some GOOD stories and do as the network claims they do "Imagine More". The tired dead pace of the show so far is just boring and the characters may be more exposed having their warts showing but I can tell you this" I am not interested in other peoples' warts", I am interested in good stories that make me escape the dull world we all live in and just want a show to make me image what might be out their in the huge universe among the stars. Destiny has been out their for a long time the stories need to be found and told.. Defying Gravity tried the soap opera thing with a much bigger budget and more experienced cast and could not build enough audience to stay on the air, SGU has attracted even a smaller audience so how is the concept expected to succeed doing the same thing Defying Gravity attempted to do and failed . The answer is SGU can not do what Defying Gravity could not do.
Defying Gravity was slow paced, used flashbacks and mystery plots and was so boring it put me too sleep and so does SGU.

I am glad SGU was not cancelled but really do want it to be better and to tell a story I care about.

I'd give your right testicle to be involved in the show but being stuck down in new zealand, well it just wont be a happin thing. I have stopped watching this Space-Crash "sc-fi" show even hough i have enjoyed previous shows immensely. It's slow, boring, depressing, lacks anything that made the other shows watchable, interesting, fun, funny, adventurous. Brad and co have obviously watched BSG and thought we could do that, forget the fans we'll try and go "upmarket", more serious. Well i'm sorry Brad & co EPIC FAIL. You should have stuck to what you knew and what the fans, who i might add keep you in a job liked. Maybe this will teach you a lesson. Is this show going to be cancelled well viewing figures point to a yes and hopefully you'll relise your mistake and bring back SGA.
this is a little sad

I guess to obtain higher ratings instead of providing a quality show such as SG1 or Atlantis.

ROFL another pathetic attempt to spin.

1. The whole season one has finished filming, so you can expect more of the same bullshits.

2. There is no "next week", SGU won't be back till March/April.

But then again what can you expect from a SGU supporter/affiliates.

Well the latest episode, is it just me or did they learn something. They used the chair !!, I have hope, the plot will develop, they left the baddie on the planet but was he really a baddy or was he right I wonder, so he's by himself on a strange new world (so far so good we have startrek now involved) he has a ship, he's smart, he can repair the ship, another new plot that's very SG1ish, still all good. The idiot computer geek gamer is left onboard as the current "smart guy". I'm excited, Not much talking into the flying steel balls that was another plus. Now get back to the chair and get Carter to stone swap and make something happen..Oh yeh SGU, I can't breath I can't wait till next week......................
Defying logic
Posted by SGU SUCKS on December 9th, 9:30pm
@Bonneteller

On top of being different to SG1/SGA, SGU's another major problem is its plot.

Where do I begin, ok the stones, you'd think they'd use the stones to communicate with the top scientists/engineers on earth and figure things out.

You just don't use the "stones" to goto a bar, until everyone on the ship is saved.

Things just don't work that way, not in real life logic, not even in hollywood logic.

SGU is just plain idiotic on many many levels and it makes it impossible to watch.
SGU is Actually Very Good
Posted by Bonneteller on December 9th, 9:11pm
I understand many of the negative comments about SGU that have been posted here. I too have spent many years with SG-1 and SG Atlantis and enjoy the reruns still on my TIVO.

At first, I saw SGU and a Stargate Galatica soap opera with way too much teen angst and what not. But now, especially with the last episode "Justice" I think we are starting to get into it. There are a lot more characters to get to know in SGU than the other series...and like the previous Stargate series the shows are far more enjoyable when you know something about the characters.

So, for me, I am looking forward to the next episode to see what happens. Its okay with me that we don't have anymore major enemies like the G'ould or Wraith for awhile and we watch a different kind of dynamic and struggle. Like a wise man once commented, "How many times can you save the world from Apophis".

I love SG 1 and Stargate Atlantis, this new series of Stargate Universe is so rubbish, dismal, slow and uninspiring and depressing which lacks good intersting story lines. Get rid of Robert Carlisle he's not a sci fi actor he should stick to the full monty, he must have got paid a lot of money to do this job cos thats the only reason why he's doin it he even said so himself in not so many words, he's no match for the actors of SC1 and Atlantis. I'm so chocca about this its outrageous. I mean the first episode looked promising, the second episode the bloody lights went out on the ship end of story blah blah blah bring back the previous style of shows with the good story lines and stop experimenting it clearly doesn't work!
thank you for that

I am so relieved to hear I am not alone in my dismay of SGU. I have been a loyal fan of the franchise and can't understand why a successful formula wasn't continued. If you want to create a gloomy, depressing, slow and uninteresting show, just don't call it Stargate. I was so sad when SGA was cancelled and really hoped for SGU to fill the void. Nada and then some, it doesn't even come close. Even after fast forwarding through the epidosdes, besides Eli and Rush, I can't even remember the characters names nor do I care what happens to them. Now that's depressing

Posted by Ally on December 9th, 9:02am
I have read many forums and the generally consensus is loyal fans of the stargate franchise are getting increasingly fed up with SGU. We keep holding and watching hoping that something will change but it seems never ending. I really do hope that Brad and Robert are aware of this and realize what is going on. I have been a fan of Stargate for 15 years and it is because of that I continue to watch this dreadful excuse for a sci fi series. It really is a tragedy the name 'Stargate' is attached to it. I expected more from this phenomenal franchise.
what happened to the explorers?
Posted by Tania on December 9th, 8:49am
What you said about Stargate being a show about exploration of new things struck a chord in me. You are right. SG1 and SGA was about exploration. The stargate teams where explorers who encountered new worlds, new races, new beings, a new way of life. I also remember that Stargate episodes were about never giving up no matter what you were faced with. It was inspiring, uplifting and light hearted. All of these qualities that Stargate: Universe lack. What exactly is the purpose of this show? I have never seen anything so depressing compared to its predecessors. It really is a great show to watch if you want all the hope sucked out of you. I have never seen characters so self absorbed and generally worthless. I can't believe the people who created gems like SG1 and SGA created such an abomination such as Stargate:Universe

As one who got a great deal of enjoyment from SG-1 and SGA, I would like to throw in an unabashed "hurrah!" for SGU.

I enjoy the pacing, the characters, the suspense - as much as I enjoyed the action and playfulness of SG-1.

This is a good series that I hope will continue on to greatness.
SGU = Garbage
Posted by SGU = Garbage on December 8th, 8:50pm
SGU is just a bunch of lame plots from other money making shows put together with sticky tapes.

Story goes no where, characters not interesting, trying too hard to create tension, moronic plots.

You need an IQ below 90 to enjoy this piece of garbage.

I guess the writers got old and their creativity ran out and now they're just trying to cash in.

Yeah good luck on that. I won't be back for S2.
Bold and to be applauded
Posted by Will on December 8th, 5:57pm
I think we all have to keep in mind the BSGs ratings were horible as well and they were very close to not having a season 4. We need to give this show time to mature. I would agree with the article that a greater sense of purpose would help, hopefully that is coming.

The communication stones should be abandoned as it's a crutch they use way too much.

As far as he comments on not watching because of openly gay and lesbian activities...grow up. If you don't understand that then I would argue you don't understand much in life. Series like Torchwood are an example where this is done right.

If I was to fix his series I would attempt to connect from earth again and send a much larger cast through then loose all communication with earth. If Lou Diamond's involvement is long term this would need to happen anyway. But they must loose contact with earth.

One of the worst mistakes made with Atlantis was them linking back with earth so fast. Don't make it again.
Why like Rush
Posted by Matt on December 8th, 4:08pm
Just curiosity? I don't like Rush at all. I know you all think the actor is great and perhaps so, but the character seems useless. Has he done anything to actually help? Other people figured out how to fix teh scrubbers (which btw, shouldn't have needed fixing if no one was ever there) and how to retrieve water. The ship got power on its own. Other than faking a near explosion when they tried to dial earth, what has Rush done to help anyone? He got them stuck on that ship in the first place when he should have just dialed a safe planet so they could evacuate. I see no good reason to keep him around.
the stones
Posted by Matt on December 8th, 3:45pm
You'd think once in a while they'd use the stones to get a REAL doctor onto the ship, rather than just the field medic. Sure, she suffices for the small stuff, but in "Life" when people are dying of a disease, you'd think there would be an epidemiologist or something there checking them out! It's only logical.
a reason to stop watching
Posted by Matt on December 8th, 3:38pm
I was disappointed in the commenter who says he watches with his wife and son and that Wray's lesbian partner was the reason they cashed in. This is a sad statement. Are you then saying that Scott's episode one hook-up in the supply closet (which was never again addressed, really classy), later hook-up with Chloe, and Young's romp with his ex-wife in Telford's body, no less, were family-friendly tv but two fully clothed lesbians having dinner together and staring at a painting wasn't? This is a very screwed-up point of view, to me.
Stargate Universe

I have to admit that I am very disappointed with the new show. It’s so much a clone of Battlestar Gallactica and I didn’t like that either.

I really enjoyed Stargate Atlantis and thought it was pulled too soon, especially considering the rubbish that’s replaced it.

I hope the producers are looking at these reviews and taking note.

As for the real point you make in this paragraph, I will be pleased if in six months time I wanted to come back here and say, "You were right."
My SGU Opinion
Posted by Enrique on December 8th, 1:34pm
I am a big fan of SG1 and SGA. I thought I was going to add SGU to this list. But now, I think we would have been better off bringing back SGA.
SGU is a real let down. A soap in space basically.
I have been in hurricanes and emergency situation and have seen the best of humans come out in such situations. This is a soap in space that portrays the message that the worst of humans come out in such situations. This is one of those shows you hope that when it travels through space and reaches and advance civilazation, that they do not think we are such loosers, so problematic, and so gloomy. I think maybe the producers should take a look a Star Trek voyager for some tips. This show was not SGA or SG1 material, but certainly better material. Me, my wife and son where watching sgu, and the lesbian seen is not a seen you feel well watching as a family. In fact, my wife and son where out for the count after that episode. The only character I come to like is Rush. I see other people say the same, so it seems they sold us on Rush only to treat him like crap, and throw him on a planet and create more dis-like for the show. In 1986, when optimus prime was killed, some of the industry learned, you better watch what you do with the "loved character". Maybe we can have rush fix that ship he found and watch "the adventures of rush", and maybe throw in a couple of borg cubes. Me and many others do not really seem to care much for any other characters that have been built. Heck just open all the airlocks and put them out of their miseries. Destiny is an object, but it has more character than they do. It seems to be smart maybe even AI. Would be cool if the ship turns out to be alive. It is certainly making desicions like it is. Maybe a precurser to the replicator AI technology. That would make a second good character. Much better knight rider! :) I will finish the season no matter what, but unless some earth chattering thing happens, or major character changes, mckay teleports in, heck if the ship transforms, maybe I come see next season if it airs.
Gimme a Break!

I totally disagree with everyone. I'm a huge fan of everything Stargate. I've enjoyed the different face that Atlantis brought to the series. And now, I'm seeing the tremendous potential offered by Stargate Universe.

Someone mentioned that it's too much like Battlestar Gallactica. Well, let's look at how much of a cult favorite that one became? There's mystery and intrigue among the crew, rebellions in waiting, cinematography and depth to the shots that are truly beautiful, and flaws to the characters. I, for one, love this show. I love the soundtrack, the feel, and the pace.

So far, the show has shown us how people respond to being thrown into an entirely unacceptable situation. Rush, in his Dr. Smith way, is as unbearable as he is essential to the crew survival.

I have no doubt that eventually, the crew will gain control of the ship (I expect the guy who sat in the chair will awaken as a genius) and learn how to dial back to earth. For all of the naysayers about the dark and brooding crew, I suppose the writers could reboot the show for you by allowing those who want to leave get back to earth, and the appropriate crew, according to Telford, will make their way to the ship.

So, for all of you who are abandoning ship, so long! You'll be back when you discover you put down a masterpiece of a book after only reading half of the first chapter. Stephen King would be in the poorhouse if all of his fans did that.

Fix and and have a hit, continue and end the franchise.

As a watcher of the frachise in England, I despair. I love SG1 and SGA to the point where I get withdrawal symptoms. I have tried to like SGU..really..and I actually think Carlyle acts evereybody off the screen (not because he's one of ours) and he is watchable for that edgy quality, and lets be fair, (*spoiler alert*) he's no more marooned (epidsode 10) than I am a wookie. No prizes for guessing the plot of episode 11 (sigh). All the actors are doing their best with this one, but its a turkey. Perhaps we can eat something different after Christmas script writers!

I cannot believe either that Mckay (David Hewlett) or even Radek has not been strapped permenantly in the chair in front of the stones so that he can fix the damn ship and please get some humour in the script.

Also, if you are going to have an episode (*spoiler alert*) about time/solar flare wormhole quirks have the decency to resolve it in the episode or the next and not let me have to take it as read that it worked out in the end.

I will watch the next episode to see if I am right about the plot and it's rather like the slo-mo car crash syndrome. You gotta watch because it can't get any worse..can it? Can it?

Then can it.

Greetings From England, Earth.

Characters
Posted by Jake on December 6th, 1:19am
I don't like one-dimensional characters. If Stargate Universe wants to act like Battlestar Galactica and explore adult themes and real-life human drama, that's fine and I'm actually excited about that idea. But doing so with "the nerd," "the evil scientist," "the meathead soldier," "the dutiful colonel," "the lost and vulnerable young woman," "the bureaucrat" and etc. etc. etc. is not going to get you anywhere near as good as BSG.

And throwing Richard Dean Anderson in as a guest star really doesn't help much, either, and is actually jarring because of the juxtaposition of the old-style Stargate and the new SGU.

Eli and Carlyle are the only ones that suggest any sort of depth to their characters. SGU had my attention when they were making promises to deliver "something different," like a BSG, but in the end they've failed to accomplish anything beyond throwing a bunch of flat, one-sided characters on a ship together and hoping that magic happens.
Wow, thanks for the weirdness

I'm really shocked to be refered to as a SGU staff member or affiliate. I mean, it's not true, but if you want to keep on refering to me as such I can't say I'm offended. If my honest opinions differ from yours in such a way you are shocked enough to prosume I'm a staff member then you really must think everyone in the world sees things like you and are therefore blinkered. Okay, so a lot of people hate the show, and I did say myself it has some dire points, but I find it interesting, I said why, and now you can grow up and get used to the fact that people differ. That's what pages like this are for.
Disappointing
Posted by Animus on December 5th, 8:50pm
Disappointing is the best description I can give at this time.

I am now 6 episodes in and so far there is only one decently written character in the show (Eli).

The plot lines are predictable and unexciting, I get the distinct impression that the writers were big fans of Clarke's "Rama" books because they seem to ape them. The characters are for the most part unlikeable and 2 dimensional at best: Dr. Rush is the arrogant scientist (another one?), Col Young is the soldier in over his head and waffles between moping and trying to lead, Lt. Scott is the one competent soldier, Chloe is the teenage girl coming of age, Lt Johansson is the nurse good-body who is there to be eye-candy rather than a medical specialist, Greer is a military meat-head who even when told that doing something will get people killed, does it anyway. Eli is the only one with half a brain, he tends to figure out the solution to a problem about 30 minutes into each episode (while the audience will figure it out within 10 minutes), he's also the only one who tries not to be a complete jerk.

I gave it 4 starts for some nice F/X work and a couple of decent actors but overall I think I'm done with the series after 6 episodes of ho-hum storytelling.

SGU is a soap opera in space. And not even a very good one. I can't see it as a sci-fi show. It is tasteless trailer trash. The writers should be ashamed for labeling it with the name STARGATE!!!
I'm trying real hard..
Posted by MacDaxon on December 5th, 2:33pm
Let me start out by I am a huge science fiction fan.. I enjoyed all of the Star Treks.. Both previous Stargates.. And many others... That being said I have tried very hard to enjoy the new SGU.. I think my problem with the show is nobody really likes each other and it sets the mood entirely too dark.. I understand they are going for a darker show.. But there are better ways to achieve it than by making none of your characters loveable.. Isn't being stuck on a vessel that is traveling to distant worlds on it's own without your assistance dark and foreboding enough without everyone involved in the situation at each others throat.. That's too much melodrama for me.. Call me crazy but most people put in a dangerous situation that go for the throat with one another end up dead.. And that seems to be where this show is heading.. 10 episodes in and I feel no connections with any charaters... My bottom line is that even in some of the darkest shows I have watched the charaters were reachable to the viewer and pulled them in.. None of the charaters are reachable as of yet.. This far into a series they need to be.. I'm still trying and I am currently getting ready to watch Justice.. I am assuming it is the mid season finale.. I'm hoping for a reason to return to watch the 11th episode.. I want to like this show I'm just waiting for the writers and the characters to give me a reason..
Problem solved.

The only thing this series needs is a new tittle. If "Stargate" wasn't in the tittle then there would be no comparisons being attempted, as none are possible. (replace the stargate with a different portal device and remove carter and o'neil). This is really lost in space 2. Right down to doctor Smith.
Personally I suggest;

Posted by Howardo on December 5th, 11:55am
Okay, I've only watched a hand full of episodes of the previous SGs because of a mate I have who is obsessed with them and although they had charm I disliked them for the same reason I disliked Star Trek and Star Wars and even the later Matrix films. There is no wonder to me in the worlds they painted as very little seemed to be mysterious beyond necessary plot elements.

I watched this series because I couldn't BELIEVE that Robert Carlyle was in it but I was slowly hooked in. Granted it gets a little slow and drab in places and without Carlyle it would hardly be worth watching (mainly due to that annoying do-gooder army bloke..... forgot his name he's so boring.... the one who is second in command?) but with the developments in this most recent episode I think it's oooooobvious what is going to happen next and I'm actually really looking forward to it. It's developing slowly but well and I like the fact it's about people and doesn't consentrate on aliens beyond the mysteries of their worlds.

Kudos to the makers I say. Although making me like it is probably a sure-fire way to alienate the traditional fans :S

I missed the sex scene darn it. Maybe I was sleeping. The whole video game thing that identified Eli was a straight ripoff of "The Last Starfighter".

The director(s) must have worked on the re-vamped Battlestar Galactica series 'cause it's filmed exactly the same way.

All you have to do is substitute the Galactica for the Ancient ship, add a British character that you're not sure about, ala Baltar and voilŕ!...Not to mention, they are lost in space...Oh! Lost in Space! That's been done too or how about ST-Voyager?

I loved Stargate, SG-1 and SG-A but SG-U stinks worse than a baby's diaper. And the chicks are lame as well and ya gotta have hot chicks in a lame Sci-Fi show or you can't hold the geek demographic. We love you Amanda! And don't get me started on "SyFy." WHAT ARE YOU PEOPLE THINKING??

Wrong, the "life" episode was the last straw and I am not watching any more SGU, I for one isn't interested in watching this episode.

But because of arrogance from people like you, people like us will continue to spread the word on how bad SGU is until it gets canceled.

The ratings of SGU is similar to SGA, but a large portion of the current viewers hates SGU, so number of viewers stay the same but now a lot of them hates it, you do that math, while the likes of you sit there and act like you're superior, when those people get sick and tired of SGU (like I did last week) they'll simply leave and never come back and SGU's raitings will dive.

We only put up with SGU for so long because A) We loved the SG series over the past years. and B) There's not too many shows to watch at the moment. So be prepared to kiss SGU's rating goodbye as life goes on.

A guy at http://n2.nabble.com/Stargate-Universe-sucks-and-they-know-it-tp4084852p4084852.html puts it nicely:

SGU shoots itself in the foot

This show just shouldn't be called Stargate anything...it really isn't. I just got done watching the most recent episode 'Justice' (why do they have to have such generic names?) and *spoilers* (not that anyone cares) the most interesting character got knocked out on his ass in the middle of nowhere and they aren't going to show the rest of the season until what....April? I've been hoping that this show could potentially become maybe even a glimmer of what the previous shows were only to be completely bewildered by their attempts at character development. This show is just not worth watching...what was that website? SGUsucks.com?
Realism, what realism ??
Posted by zoomer on December 5th, 12:38am
In the first episode they finf the co2 scrubbers dirty and past due. Dirty from what. Nothing living was ever on the ship to produce co2. In fact the life support shouldn't even been operational until somebody came through the stargate. And why is the ship dirty? or part of the walls apparently rusted?
In the pilot Young says "lets' just dial earth" They needed the power from a planet's core to establish the first worm hole, is he so stupid to think the old rust bucket has the capacity to generate much energy. the worst is definitely the characters which are only realistic in context to day time tv.
If I'm going to spend an hour with "tv people" You can be sure I'll choose peeps I like. I could have been friends with sg1 or the gang from Atlantis. I would jettison everybody off of Destiny.
Some post claim that this at least goes in a new direction. It's actually the deep space nine and voyager shot in the style of BSG with the cast from days of our lives.

And the stones... It's so much more realistic to have people use them to go to night clubs than have Carter and Mckay help fix the ship.

the only thing real thing about SGU is the way it gets me switch channels.

I too no longer follow SGU. I can't stand to watch it because it is so bland and slow paced. I loved SG1 but I wasn't a fan of Atlantis. SGU is like a soap drama with the attempt to be made hip and current. It lacks the adventure. They are on this fascinating ship but I feel little to no progress is being made. They had such a good base foundation with SG1 and Atlantis but have gone a completely different way. I can't wait for more V episodes and Caprica looks amazing. bye bye SGU
Why SGU fails the SciFi audience
Posted by SciFi (not Syfy) Fan on December 4th, 11:48pm
I completely agree with what Mike posted about what he thinks the writers of SGU are saying to Stargate fans: "Screw you computer guy! Throw away the Stargate-cup you have at home. Housewives are our new target audience."

SGU, which I also have stopped watching after the episode "Life," has lost me for many of the same reasons it has lost so many other viewers.

***It hasn't made me feel anything about its characters.
When comparing SGU with BSG, other Stargate shows, or any other “good” shows, SGU has simply failed to make characters appealing to the viewers. While they may be hoping to build up the characters over the long term through the alien stone plot device, and other interesting instances like in Time when we see a new side of Eli, they simply have not done so save for a few characters thus far. And you can’t wait to develop characters until halfway through the season. Within a few episodes, one would hope to have engendered some feelings in the viewers towards characters, but right now viewers only feel either apathy or plain disgust.

***The drama in SGU is soap-opera-esque, in a way which has not differentiated itself or captured people’s attention.
When entire episodes revolve around cheating partners, unhappy love lives, and sleeping around on the ship, that sounds like soap-opera drama and nothing else. SGU IS NO BATTLESTAR GALACTICA. I say that because, unlike BSG, SGU has completely failed at weaving together the complex interpersonal storylines with the Scifi aspects of the situation. For example, in BSG, your love interest could turn out to be a rogue member or willing spy of a race bent upon the genocide of your species; your political decisions, based on anger or rational thinking, could determine the fate of thousands; your morals and ethics were challenged in the name of survival, not just in the name of who’s sleeping with who, though this element was artfully combined. SGU fails to make this a scifi drama and leaves us with a drama that just incidentally happens to be set on a spaceship. If it had been a real, effective scifi drama, I probably would keep watching even though this departs from the old Stargate shows.

***The external challenges to the characters are weak (there are no strong antagonists).
There seems to be a conspicuous lack of any kind of antagonist besides the ship’s own failing systems, which hardly makes for an exciting external challenge in this show to the characters (at least not in the way it’s currently being done). Even if the writers are going to avoid any “rubber face aliens,” they could include some sort of shadowy presence following the ship, or emerging from the darkness on a regular basis to threaten the voyagers and unite them in some sort of collective effort towards survival. I’m not saying that the “cloud creature” or the virus or the chest-burrowing creatures are not good, but they’re just not enough at this point and the show is thus solely relying on the tension of “oh, the ship’s gonna break down” as the force working against our characters which is frankly not all that exciting at the moment.

***SGU doesn’t challenge the viewers, doesn’t stretch our minds in any way.
I WILL say that the one of two exceptions to this is Camille’s lesbian relationship, which I for one am glad is included (without much sexual detail) because it does challenge the viewer. The second exception is the time loop in Time, which I think was an interesting episode due to this concept. But nothing else challenges the viewers in all of these episodes. Even the alien stone plot device is glossed over by replacing the actor whose body should be in the scene with the actor whose mind is in the scene, making it psychologically less jarring and less challenging for both the studio, and for the viewer. Just imagine if Lou Diamond Phillips actually had to act like Louis Ferreira’s character, then switch back to being Colonel Telford. He’d flip his lid. And it would be a more realistic portrayal of what Colonel Young’s wife was seeing, and how odd it would be.

So, for me, despite my interest in seeing David Blue’s and Robert Carlyle’s characters develop and go further in this show, I’m giving up on it and likely won’t be back. After such a weak beginning, and with such a response from Cooper and Wright with no acknowledgement of legitimate concerns about the show, I sincerely don’t believe it’s going to change. I do believe that Syfy will keep it going because, as several have pointed out, some people with nothing better to do with their time will continue to watch this show simply because of the Stargate brand name. And it’s not like Syfy has much going for it except Caprica these days.

No need to comment! I hope writers, directors and produces enjoy making SU for themselves. I have the ultimate control over them, I will not longer watch this program or anything else SciFi will do in the future. One of my most liked channels is now on my do not watch list. I was a fan of SG1 (most of the time) and Stargate Atlantis most of the time (even bought the series for my 10 year old). But we will not be watching the SU now or in the future.

I agree with most of you in that Stargate Universe is not as good as SG-1 however it is considerably better than Atlantis. Lets be honest Stargate Atlantis was horrible. The plots were OK, that being the most favorable comment I could come up with, but the character development and acting were both so bad as to be almost comedic. Stargate Universe may be slow and dry but at least the acting is decent and even in the first season the charactors are truer to the human condition than anything the Atlantis series ever brought to the table. I may not be popular in my views but I say watching a few episodes is not giving a series a chance, you have to let the plot and characters develop before you can pass judgment.

My friend and I watched 4 episodes a week of SG1 and were so dissapointed when we finished all 10 series but we had Atlantis but SGU started on the tele, woooo you have no idea how we were looking forward to it..We saw sex scenes we saw girl on girl and maybe men kissing men shortly, it made us sick. Is this Stargate, what's going on if we want reality we can watch Days of our Lives, what a dissapointment and then we have these people that don't want to be there at all. What happen to Carter saving the world and simple Jack who's only claim to a brain is the higher Aliens say he was developed, hmm but it was fun.
People that could never die and would always save the day, brilliant, it was Stargate and it's why we watched it, Ball was great, an idiot with intelligence, who could write this stuff, again brilliant.
Now SGU, we have to "get to know everyone, and in depth, I shudder everytime someone starts talking to the round flying ball of steel.
The wispy sand thingy (thats what we call it), well that went no where and the two people that went through the gate on the planet, they died, heros dont die in stargate`!!. What's wrong with you writers, next thing is there will be sex scenes, ah there was. This is Stargate, get it together while there are still a few watching, make an episode (like Dallas) where it was all a dream and pretend these 9 episodes never happened. We love !! Stargate !! you are wrecking it, listen to everyone and learn. I will always watch Stargate just stop what you are doing.

Well, i felt disappointed. Can’t really say anything more about “feelings on the show”. Angry maybe too.
Fact is i agree with lof of ppl here, but have to dissagree on one thing, if SGA were still on, nobody will be watching SGU, and thats the real reason it got cancelled, thats why they cant coexist.
Producers knew this, in order to accept something “different” you have to let go the other show, if not, nobody will ever embrace this new shit.
Well, guess what, they got us “fighting” the show more than watching it or enjoing it, but they still “got us”.
Probably in time we will drop it and so will the show.
I get annoyed constantly with the plots drama -if theres a plot at all-. Going back to earth constantly, all the tears and let downs, i mean, where the hell is the SCI fi? Sometimes i think im watching a Hallmark movie god dam. The only thing that gets me watching its faith in a change, that once all chars are developed enough we get to see some action.
But my faith is fading, like many others, so im hoping for a complete failure more than a change now, couse maybe if this shits ends quickly enough, a new SG begins.
So its sad, we are all fans of SG wishing failure, i dont get how SCI FI can be happy about that, even if the numbers are not that bad, that cant be good.
Realism
Posted by Michael on December 1st, 3:59pm
I don't agree that a show that is realistic is inherently better than one that isn't. Some of the finest movies in the history of cinema are lacking in realism. However, achieving a level of realism would be a commendable achievement if that were an aim of the cast and crew. It is a tough thing to do in a sci-fi series and I think SGU has been only partially successful.

In the world of film and television no amount of realism will make something into a quality product unless it is technically impressive and entertaining. I commend the makers of SGU on producing a series that is very impressive technically. The sets, in particular, are marvelous (as are those of all the Stargate series). What constitutes entertainment is, of course, a matter of personal taste. Despite the numerous qualities of SGU and what I am certain are genuine efforts on the part of the cast and crew to make the best show that they can, I personally have not found it to be entertaining and I do think the writing is lacking in some regards. I am not saying that it is a bad show that darkens the good name of the Stargate franchise, only that it should not be regarded as superior to SG-1, Atlantis and similar shows just because it strives for realism.

I am also not a fan of the handheld camera style of filming. Aside from the fact that it too easily draws parallels with Battlestar Galactica, I think it is pretentious and unnecessary. I cannot see any dramatic purpose served by it and I don't find that it adds realism.

I, for one, applaud the writers inclusion of a lesbian character. In addition to being an unimaginative traditionalist, I am a woolly liberal and I support efforts like this that familiarise us with harmless lifestyles that may be different from those adopted by the majority or that may have traditionally been held as morally unacceptable without rational justification. I don't, however, agree with the decision to include sex scenes in SGU. I am not offended by it personally but I think it is a cheap way of making something appear more adult. Moreover, it could cut off a proportion of Stargate's traditional audience (i.e. children) that could enjoy and learn from the show, regardless of its otherwise more mature tone.

How about those who don't like SGU stop watching it.

Sticking around hoping it will get better just don't help, man.

Tune out and wait for a commercial to jump at you and say: "Come back to stargate .. we've got action now, we dropped the teenie drama bs, we've got replicators!!!!"

THEN start watching again.

Isn't there something better you can be doing with your time then watching this dribble??

Write some stargate episodes of your own, use the SGU cast if you want. Show them it can be better.

I'd rather READ an interesting SGU fan written episode than WATCH teenie dramma garbage that Mr. Wright and Ms. Mallozzie spit up.

What's with TPTB anyways? This drama crap isn't Stargate.

I digress...
SGU is it enough?

It is clear for a fact that SGU is taking the show in an entirely different approach. It felt like watching those family shows or those shows where people are stranded on an Island with all the amount of drama being played in the show. I believe it is overly exaggerated on how people find it revolting that when it started as an adventurous and fun show to watch, it changes to a drama show. One should not forget the changes that happened throughout Stargate itself, towards the end of SG-1 new characters were involved as well as an entirely new story was played in the show. When Stargate Atlantis appeared the Leaders of the team kept changing. There was allot of change and yet I am sure not everybody enjoyed these sudden changes of the characters being changed, yet people still approved the show. SGU is a new show with a different style and concept, showing life in a different perspective. Yes the people are miserable throughout the show and would do anything to return back home, but keep in mind that this show gives allot of detail in the recording as well to the change in what would be a standard day in Stargate command. Its still the beginning of the show, yes there is not allot of real exiting adventure being played but give it some time. I didnt like SG-1 in the beginning but after a while it was an enjoyable TV show. I hope you all would try and support SGU into continuing broadcasting the show.

My son is a huge fan of both SG1 and Atlantis, He convinced me (not a fan) to watch all of the seasons he has on dvd and the movies and I was hooked. We looked forward to Friday evenings watching to see what was happening. When we learned Atlantis was cancelled and what the concept for the new show was...well I was skeptical, but was willing to give it a chance. Wow...the show is terrible. It is depressing and I quite frankly don't care about ANY of the characters. The missed opportunities for interesting storylines are many. Instead of developing the chair storyline in the last episode we got to watch another case of people using the stones to go back to earth. And most of all the show needs some humor for pete's sake. All the characters do is whine and complain about everything. I will not be watching anymore episodes of the show and sincerely hope it is cancelled. It is not worthy to have the Stargate name associated with it.

My oooooh my how dissapointing SGU is!! If they just called the series Universe, then it would be fine, because then they wouldnt put shame spots on the awsome SG and SGA.

SGU utterly fails in my eys, yet another fan gone, hope you find some replacement.

Stargate Universe is embarrassing.

Sure Sg-1 and Atlantis were cheesy, lite SF fare but they did it well. They were simple and fun with engaging characters. Universe is trying to be deep and sophisticated and failing miserably. At least BSG had examinations of genocide, political regimes, religion, and AI sentience. Universe is all about who's banging whom. How many episodes have been wasted on soap opera crap set on Earth? It's a pathetic joke.

The only fans who continue to defend this tripe are the ones who would blindly follow anything with "Stargate" in the title.

For five years I could not wait for each episode of SGA, which I watched and recorded so I could watch it again. I still record the reruns on SyFy. I miss SGA soooo much.

I have tried to give SGU a chance, but I will not even bother to record the second half of Season One. I would rather watch reruns of SG1 and SGA.
Reality
Posted by Reality on November 30th, 8:49am
This show is supposed to be more realistic and sophisticated than previous Stargates.

But realistically, all the people on the Destiny came from an offworld base, Icarus. That means that aside from Eli and Chloe, they should all be well-trained people of ability and intelligence. Realistically, these characters wouldn't be as inept as they are on SGU, and they wouldn't just mill around uselessly and bicker. They'd figure out how to survive and make efforts to improve their situation if they can't escape it.

Those communication stones are a complete albatross for this show. Again, if it's realism we're supposed to expect: realistically, there's no reason not to use the stones to swap out Chloe and other useless people aboard the Destiny and bring aboard Ancient tech experts who can fix the ship and maybe even find a way to bring the crew home.

The fact that the show hasn't done this, or even explained why they're not trying it, seems to indicate that the writers imagine the audience wouldn't think of this obvious use of the stones. That's just insulting to the intelligence of anyone watching their supposedly more realistic and sophisticated show.

This show takes a lot of elements from BSG, but the biggest resemblance I see is to Lost. Like Lost, SGU is basically a nighttime soap with some genre trappings. It has Lost's lame love triangle and tiresome romance plots, but lacks the mysteries and interconnections that turned Lost into a hit phenomenon.

I enjoyed SG-1 and SGA, but the writing was never a draw. These writers could just about eke out a derivative sci-fi action-adventure with some humorous character interaction. When they set their sights higher than that, they tended to screw it up.

What they're trying to do with SGU is way out of their league.

This is my first comment on IMDb. I have never seen so badly developed, annoying, boring, stupid and ignorant show in my life. I am a huge fan of SG1/SGA and this show is an insult for the whole franchise.

Hey, I'm going to put some idiotic developed character's in a spaceship, and then I'm going to make them look like bunch of monkeys who cant even control basic emotions. I'm going to take from BSG series annoying character's, cut out the actual fighting scenes, good music or about anything else, and leave them with nothing but spite and hate for fellowship and mankind. And then I'm going to let them lose to aimlessly wander around on a alien spaceship pushing some strange buttons and record every emotion monkeys have. And multiply, of course.

That's about it. Yeap. I could have more fun staring at one dot on my floor for 9 hours.

I have watched 9 episodes of this, and I'm bored to death as most fans of SG1/SGA are. We are flying and flying and flying, but nothing ever happens ... Oh, we have no more water on the ship.. let's scream on each other for a while, maybe that will solve the problem... How about sex? Why not. Got nothing better to do as a monkey in this show. But, let us scream first for a while right now, for no apparent reason, just to bore to death our fans ... Give me back my 9 hours!

The director and screenwriters of SGU hate SG1/SGA. I'm done with this one.

You have to keep asking yourself this question as you watch the series self destroy within the first 10 episodes.

When SGU was announced it was marketed as using the 8th (or was it 9th.. see even i forgot already) chevron to go to some really cool places and expand on the progress SGA and SG1 made with alien races and technologies... Well obviously none of this is ever taking place here. Instead we have star trek voyager meets battlestar gallactica and the cast has been kidnapped from the set of MTVs the real world.

Between the train wreck plot lines, flat and downright revolting acting and characters, there isn't much going on. It is sad when they even have to steal from LOST's flashbacks in order to fill the time in, and it's not even the end of the first season.

I am not sure what this show tries to do.. but one thing is certain: it is painful to watch, offers nothing to the viewers and cannot be called stargate. Flying on a dead ship on auto pilot through the universe.. flying.. and flying.. and flying.. and playing boy meets girl... and flying.. and ooh we are out of power.. and we found a sun and we are flying... It is painful to even try to make fun of this show; it does it so well on it's own.

Frankly there is no civil way of putting it. What the hell is this crap?

After just finishing the episode "Time" I am left with an uneasy feeling in my stomach. It was seriously painful to watch but having been a fan of Stargate since its beginning I perservered. Unfortunately I was not rewarded for my perseverance. This episode has had all the same problems that its previous episodes did and it compounded on another with their "brilliant" idea to do everything through the lens of a kino. This horrible idea gave me flashbacks of the annoying Blair Witch Project movie.

Lets talk about the other issues that have arisen in this cheap knockoff of Stargate. I've already mentioned camera work so we can start with this. The movement is nauseating, and their angles are often half obstructed. When we move on to characters we all know that there has to be someone that you don't like. BUT, there should be someone you do like. That's not the case here. Every character here is out for their own well being with the exception of David Blue's character Eli. Unfortunately, his character is constantly stepped on and is therefore irrelevant.

This show craves two things. A common enemy and control. Many people are comparing this to Battlestar Galactica but even they had a common enemy. SG Atlantis had the Wraith, and SG-1 had the Gould, Ori, and Replicators. In SGU they are their own enemy. They haven't faced off against an intelligent being yet and its been 8 episodes! Now, in order for them to actually have an enemy to face on a repeated basis they do need to actually be in control of the ship otherwise they'd be sitting ducks. So I wonder why the writers don't allow them to be in control of their destinies instead of just fighting with strange circumstances to barely stay alive.

I(and the other viewers) could really care less that Col Everett is having marriage troubles a million light years away. But, they decided to show that in not one but two episodes. Or, how about that Chloe is mad because her ex-boyfriend and her best friend are together a million light years away? The character development is forced, not naturally flowing.

I could go on but readers get the idea from this and the other 122 negative comments. I will continue to watch this for a couple more episodes but I truly think that the Creators/producers have a decision to make. They can either turn this into a real Stargate production or they should scrap it and save themselves from going bankrupt. The patience of the fans is running out and it will likely hurt your future revenues of any new Stargate movies that you want to bring out.

After watching the pilot episode of SGU, I can now recommend the newest installment of the once-beloved Stargate series to all the insomniacs out there. SGU was a mash of Battlestar Galactica and Days of Our Lives.

New direction? More like lack of direction. Good camera-work? Closer to vomit-inducing cameraJERK. The story moved along at a snails' pace, with no subtle or intricate plot developments to make up for it. Lengthy dialogues ensued throughout the show only when characters were hurt for no apparent reason. Quite a few scenes were a complete waste of alloted air time; such as the sex scene between one barely-introduced character and another unknown character. In a scenario where teleportation beams are a part of life, logic entails that the brain of the operations (Dr. Rush) wouldn't treat a mundane flying camera as if it were completely foreign and marvelous. The characters' efforts throughout the show amount to nothing in the end, as everything could be solved if anyone amongst the brilliant team of SG personnel would think to dial back to Earth. But perhaps the extras are simply playing themselves, as half of the supposed 'personnel' that walk through the stargate are dressed like civilians. Where were the costume designers?

Universe's predecessor, Atlantis, had a far better cast of likable characters. Strong, smart and talented characters were dropped from the air so that non-relatable characters could take their place. The Senator was so annoying and useless throughout the show that when he sacrificed himself, you couldn't help but feel a wash of relief. The Senator's daughter did a great job of taking on the role of 'annoying character of SGU' when he died, as a whole 15 minutes of airtime was devoted to watching her cry and mourn over a character with no reputation with the audience. Dr. Rush was presented as more of a villainous weasel than a genius who imbues the show with a sense of authenticity -- as SG:1 and Atlantis both had.

Where there was once a quality franchise with a 10-year reputation, there now stands a truly awful show with complete disregard to longtime fans of SG, or anyone with eyes, ears and a brain for that matter.

Heartbreaking for true Stargate fans, 21 November 2009

2/10

Author: maseohp from United Kingdom

As a hardcore Stargate fan who has watched everything Stargate, SGU is an insult to all true Stargate fans. SG-1 and Atlantis were fun series whereas Universe is a boring mess of a show. SG-1 and Atlantis had action, humour, likable characters, and engaging plots. Universe has none of these and has replaced them with generic dialogue, whiny dull characters and very little sci-fi or Stargate action.

The writers should honestly be sacked. They clearly do not know how to write science fiction nor do they know good drama. Universe is clearly a mish-mash of other successful shows (BSG, Voyager, Lost). In TV and cinema, everyone knows that overusing flashbacks to move the story along is a crutch and is a sign of very poor writing. Universe uses this ploy to spectacularly dull effect. The more I learn about the characters in Universe, the more I could care less. In the episode where they glimpsed their own future and found out they were all going to die from chest-burrowing aliens but in the end didn't, I got more upset that they all survived.

Eli is the only remotely likable character and even he is a nerd stereotype. The other characters are either meat-head military types, egomaniacal scientist types or vapid slut types. Every show just seems to be these supposed professionals acting like prepubescent kids that bitch about one dull problem or the other. I know they are stuck on a ship far far away from home and issues like supplies and plans to get home are important, but nine episodes in, we don't want the same repeated drivel and whining. We want by now some proper science fiction, more gate exploration, contact with sentient aliens, etc.

To the writers of SGU, as a Stargate fan (yes this show is part of the STARGATE franchise), your characters are generic and unlikeable and I don't want to spend an hour every week watching their feelings and personal demons being explored. This is a sci-fi show on the SyFy channel, can you remember this? Stargate has always been built on battles between humans and cool alien baddies (Goa'uld, Ori, Wraith). If what I hear is true that Universe's baddies are going to be the underwhelming Lucian Alliance, then that is it for me as with regards to watching Universe. A bunch of space mercenaries and crooks is as uninteresting a sci-fi villain as I could imagine.

As a Stargate fan, I am mad as hell that they have ruined the good name of Stargate. The writers should be shot for making a Stargate series a drama, and a very bad drama at that. I'm sure Universe may have drawn in some new casual viewers, but they have probably lost more devoted Stargate and sci-fi fans who would have stayed for the long haul had it even been a half-decent Stargate series. Universe is Stargate only in name!

I completely disagree with that. It ties in with the whole rubbish line that somehow constant drama scenes about silly relationships and "who's cheating with who" storylines are somehow more "complex", "adult" and "educated" than previous Stargate focuses.

SG-1 and SG-A had huge mythologies and ongoing background plots involving ascended ancient races, various rising and falling empires all interacting with each, preying on each others strength and weaknesses, to create an amazingly rich tapestry, which was the main reason I - and I suspect many others - absolutely love the show.

SG-U's background is more like something out of 90210 or one of the many other teen dramas out there, the "rich tapestry" is "have those two slept together yet or not" and "oh, they hate each other because his ex cheated with him". To claim that somehow makes for more complex & intelligent watching than SG-1/SG-A is just plain absurd.

Re: Am I the only one that hates the whole Young/wife side-plot?

This is show is so retarded there are no words to express it. Combined with all the flaws in it makes just enough for me to watch it because there is nothing else at the moment similar I can watch.

But to the point. The whole Young relationship is crap because there is no trust. You telling me that you are going to believe a man who come in your house telling you a ****load of stuff about your husband who is lightyears away and can't defend himself and believe it? When the trust is gone better say bye bye because whatever you do or don't do wont help get it back

How old are these people supposed to be... adults? Well they don't act like it. This is more 15y old drama lama here say crap story. Probably tailored for that age group anyways. And seriously all these people walking around telling people about the Gate program... yeah right. I can see how important security is at the moment.
Stop using SGA/SG1 as an excuse.

"Discord" below is another shining example of people who doesn't get it and is still in denial .

People like him goes to great length to explain why SGU has the right to be different.
But like the rest of them they automatically assume being different = good.

The thing they are really afraid to discuss is how SGU sucks not only as a Sci-Fi, but also as a drama.

I mean just watch the recent "Life" episode. It's so bad it's beyond comprehension.
Even the die hard fans at Syfy.com/IMDB/Gateworld who refused to acknowledge the fact SGU sucked can't take it anymore,
At best they call it "snorefest, deadhorse", and you can just go and read the rest of more colorful descriptions.

SGU sucks hard compare to the rest of the soaps out there.

It's just that simple. Stop using SGA/SG1 as an excuse.
Changes comes hard to some people I guess..

I honestly can say I really enjoy SGU, much more then SG-1 and SG-A. The first I watched on and off if there was nothing better on, but for me Atlantis felt like trash. It seemed all they did was try to remake SG-1 with a smaller budget. It had its momments, the Vegas episode was fun to watch, but overall it felt same old, same old.

Look they tried it with Enterprise, eventually any series will collapse under its own weight unless soemthing radically different is tried. This is what SGU is, yeah at first blush it comes across as very BSG like.. but looking past that it starts to remind me of all the old SCI-FI out there, which was less about bullets flying and huge explosions going off every couple seconds and more in line with the wonder and awe of people coming across things they've never seen before. Its about exploration.

Now if you are one of those people who wants your boom boom, blam blam fix.. well.. go watch your eleven(?) seasons of SG1(yet again) or however many seasons Atlantis on the air(I seriously doubt you've watched it more then once, so here's your chance). You've had your shows, they ended. Accept it and move on, if this doesn't interest you then watch something that does. Just because you were a fan of Stargate since the early 90's doesn't make you any more entitled to the show then someone who's just started watching this season.

P.S. Red Dwarf, Torchwood were awesome. Will always be.
A Very Poor Start
Posted by Bilbo on November 29th, 1:51am
I am extremely disappointed with SG-U. I am not knocking the show because it doesn't remind me of SG-1 or SG-A, but I do wish that the writers would learn some essential facts about successful storytelling.

One basic fact is that the audience should care about the fate of the characters. I care so little about the blase' characters in SG-U that I don't even know most of their names yet (even though I have seen every episode). Contrast this situation with say, Babylon 5, where nearly every character had an interesting personality from the start. The characters on SG-U seem to be a bunch of weenies!

SG-U is also extremely weak on plot. The writers seem to want to fill this void with "relationship stories". The episode "LIFE" was the worst yet. Am I supposed to care that Young's wife may be screwing around with Lou Diamond Phillips' character? Was I supposed to be turned on by a character's lesbian relationship? I couldn't care less about these people; I don't even know them yet! It seems to me that writers who aspire to something better than soap opera ought to build the relationships between the characters WITHIN the plot but not make relationships the plot itself. Compare SG-U with the original Star Trek series. Relationships between Kirk, McCoy and Spock were formed within stories, they were not the stories themselves.

Also, if I want to watch an interesting show in which people are trapped
somewhere and want to get home, I'll watch LOST!
Thre is only one thing SGU can do

Die with dignity. They need to explode Destiny into a enemy ship to save the Earth. Please end this crap as soon as possible. These writers need to find a new job.
Striking a balance
Posted by Robert (Admin) on November 28th, 10:02pm
I can understand Brad and Robert's deep desire after 10 years to do something a bit different. But I disagree with the decision to try to clone the Battlestar tone and tempo. I grew sick of BSG in it's final year (except the last few episodes) because of the bleakness, and the fact that everyone was constantly sniping at one another. I also never bought into the whole "more human than human" Cylons and their bickering ways; but that's another story.

Personally, I think Stargate could have given us a bit darker, grittier show without running all the way into the BSG end zone. There's a wonderful precedent for what SGU could have been like - a show that struck the perfect balance between the space opera elements so many people like and the grittier material - and that show was Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. I think Brad and Robert would have been better to study that show as an example of what Universe could have been, as opposed to the raw verisimilitude they seem to be trying to harvest from BSG.

But, of course, that's just my 2 cents.
Stargate Universe sucks and they know it
Posted by Spaceman13 on November 28th, 9:34pm
Syfy is obviously self destructing with SGU.

But what is even more pathetic is the people Who try to defend this piece of garbage.

Across the internet, in about every 10 posts where people simply say the truth that SGU sucks,
1 idiot will come along and say SGU is good, because apareantly "SGU is different from SG1/SGA".

Look, morons, imagine this:
1. A new Coca Cola that uses salt instead of sugar.
2. A new Mission Impossible movie with no mission.
3. A new 007 movie with no 007.

These 1 in 10 idiots will be the same idiots who'll argue "salty Coke is good because I use salt for my
chicken","not everyone likes sugar", "it's still coke because it has water in it".

These morons simply doesn't understand one simple fact - If Coke is salty then it isn't Coke anymore.

Same goes with SGU, if you replace all the fun/purpose/action/adventure with depression/lost/gay&lesbians drama, then SGU simply isn't part of StarGate. Stop being a loser and argue about dictionary definitions on what is SG what isn't, what is SciFi and what isn't.

Once this simple fact is understood, we can move on to exactly why SGU simply fails on all accounts.

SGU sucks as a drama because of 1 simple reason - The writers lack the skills to make viewers care about the characters.

I thought Defying Gravity was bad until I watched SGU. That's when I realized while I found DG piss boring, atleast I cared about some of the characters in DG.

The writers of SGU sucks and they know it, the signs are everywhere, they are so inscure about their lame space drama writing skills, they have to invent this "jump the shark/nuke the fridge" stone device that allow them to go back to the only thing they know how to write - Earth love/hate relationships.

They are also so insecure about it that they had to hijjack the SG brand, because deep inside they know they lack the quality to make a good drama series that can stand on its own.

I am done with SGU, hopefully someone who understands SciFi will come up with a proper alternative soon.

Argument 1: "You don't give it time"
Answer: First, it's you're wishful thinking that it will get better. Second, we did gave it time. Third, even if it did change, this wont make it ok again.

Argument 2: "SG-1 was just techi sci-fi and *shields up*"
Answer: First, yes it was techi. That's the point of sci-fi. For the drama queens there is "desperate housewives". Go watch it with your mother. Second, SG-1 was full of drama, if you don't agree, then you obviously never saw it. The drama was not that exaggerated, that every moron can get it.

And the most amusing argument:
"The main cmplaint i see here is you guys lost your ritalin bottles and can't maintain your attention span if something isnt exploding for you to gasp at."
If your life is really that boring that you find the "boringness", which is SGU entertaining, then I really feel sorry for you! No wait, actually I dont.
The REAL lifes of normal people are much more entertaining then the, so called "realistic" characters of SGU.

Stargate's key features: Adventure, loveable characters, humour, aliens, action, exploration, morality, allies, villains, technology, fun, consistency, believability, intelectually stimulating storylines...

What SGU lacks: Adventure, loveable characters, humour, aliens, action, exploration, morality, allies, villains, technology, fun, consistency, believability, intelectually stimulating storylines...

Conclusion: SGU is not Stargate. Don't worry guys, a show that nobody watches can't continue much longer...

"It's not SG-1 OR SGA, people need to realise this!" - A few comments.

No it isn't either of those shows but it's a part of a well established Franchise, and so should have at least a semblance of the ingredients that made the first two so successful.

I loved Defying Gravity & I loved Battlestar Galactica, so the idea of a bit of Drama in Space isn't something I would shy away from. That said, I still find this show rubbish. It's boring, monotonous and I couldn't possibly care less about these characters. For a character-driven show or however wright etc pushed it, I wouldn't care in the slightest if any of them were killed off.
I'm done with it
Posted by Jessica on November 28th, 5:36am
A few people have stated that perhaps we just don't have a long enough attention span to enjoy the show at it's pace, but I don't see why I should have to give a show more than 10 episodes for something interesting to happen.

I didn't like SG-1, but I could see why people did like it, I just didn't personally like any of the characters. I loved SGA even with it's many faults during the latter seasons, so I was eager to give SGU a try & I just can't watch it anymore.

For a character-based program like the producers tried to sell it as, I find that even SGA, as a 'silly adventure-based program' had far more interesting characters and & I cared more about them in 30 minutes than I still do anyone on SGU after all this time.
Not a lost cause yet...
Posted by Brandon on November 28th, 5:16am
Mr Toppum Hat,

I agree. My problem isn't so much the plausibility or the plot as it is the fact that it has the Stargate name on it and appearances by Stargate characters from previous series but doesn't even remotely feel like the shows are in the same mythology or universe.

Some ripped on Atlantis for following the SG-1 mold too closely when it started....(Teyla was basically just a female version of Teal'c without the turning on their people plot device, Sheppard was just a younger version of O'Neill with the puns and smartassery) so I wonder if the producers had the desire to break that mold for SGU and just overshot it by a couple Chevrons.

I think there is still time to fix it but I doubt they will. They said "no rubber face aliens" and if they stick to that I can't see the series lasting much longer than 3 seasons. The alien races as enemies and allies were part of the charm for SG-1 and SGA and also served a purpose as main plot devices.

The overall tone needs to be Stargateified whether its adding humor or scrapping the "soapy operay who's sleeping with who" stuff. A show can be funny, dramatic, sci-fi, and dark and depressing all in the same episode....and if they figure that out they could make this thing work. So far they seem too heavily focused on the dark and depressing. If the creators and writing staff need an example of this they should put down the Battlestar DVD's for a few minutes and watch the episode of Firefly called "Out of Gas" which does this brilliantly.
Not for me...so far
Posted by Adam on November 27th, 9:56pm
I've written this one off for now for many of the reasons already mentioned. I know it isn't supposed to be SG1 or SGA but it also doesn't stack up to other scifi shows that are available.

I would actually rather spend my time on Sanctuary, V or Supernatural. I would even watch SG1 reruns before going any further with SGU. Maybe after a couple seasons, if it lasts, I'll check again to see if they ever truly put their brilliant "character development" in and added a plot while they were thinking about it.

those plot-device-stones would be the worst godawful part of the show if it weren't for the annoying nerd they inserted to appease their "fanbase."

It is so frustrating how such a rich setting with so many possibilities can be fumbled so terribly.

SGU is Off the Air
Posted by Tyler on November 27th, 4:24pm
I've read all of the reviews and comments here and I seem to hold a similar feeling as most. This isn't what Stargate is about. The style of filming is choppy--I suppose to make one feel a part of the cast. The writing is so-so. The stories are fairly uneventful. But what put me over the top was the sexual-- peeping-tom like scenes. And then throw in a lesbian relationship. Hey, if others want to watch that... well that your choice. But to have all of that in a show that kids would be drawn toward is way over the line for me and my family.

SGU is off the air in my home from this time forward.

SG:U could be a really great show if they concentrated on the story and adventure and didn't just try to turn it into a BSG clone.

If I put a sci-fi show on, it's because I want to watch a good sci-fi based plot, not a drama show where sex is the only thing on anyone's mind.
Each to their own
Posted by Mr Toppum Hat on November 27th, 12:41pm
How do you define "right", Daver? Some people like "corny" sci-fi shows and some people don't. Each group is entitled to its taste. Neither one nor the other is more worthy. They are also entitled to express them and to say that they don't like something that doesn't match them. Life and real people are, indeed, more complicated than the corny SG-1 & Atlantis installments, but that doesn't mean people should like watching them. As Gareth said in the first comment, each to their own.

As for comparing SGU with SGA and SG-1, it is inevitable. SGU is not a completely new show: it is a new Stargate show and people will come in to it with certain hopes and expectations. These are likely to include the hope that the show includes the elements that made them fans of the franchise in the first place. If they feel that those elements are absent - even in the interests of greater realism - they are likely to express that disappointment and switch off.

The first season of SGU is already in the can. Let's hope that the writers take note of what people are saying here and bring those people who don't like the show back into tht fold without alienating those that do.
SG: Suburbs
Posted by Neelie on November 27th, 12:21pm
These days it seems like they spend half of their time in American suburbs, not Destiny.

Proves the point that taking those stones to Destiny was an easy escape for the writers. Bad choice when your writing staff is prone to jumping over the fence where the hedge is lowest.
Hold the corn, please...
Posted by Daver on November 27th, 12:14pm
Sorry, folks. Life and real people are a bit more complicated than the corny SG-1 & Atlantis installments bothered to portray. SG-1 was tolerable, Atlantis was pure, embarassing geekhood. It's nice to finally see some sci-fi with balls, attitude, and realistic characters.

I suppose the trials and tribulations of realistic characters are too much for the shoot-em up, zap 'em, techno-geek-speak crowd.

If the typical corn-loving sci-fi crowd doesn't like the new SGU, the producers and writers are finally doing something right.

Corn-filled sci-fi this ain't.

I love science fiction. I mean, I even enjoy movies other rate as horribly boring.

The announcement of Stargate Universe was for me the reason to make sure, that I am in Germany are able to watch every episode when it was aired.

However, what I saw until now, was totally boring! The only 3 other more borings were Red Dwarf, Dr. Who and the hardcore, the most worst ever ever aired Torchwood.

Look, I love the starship Destiny. But what do I know of the ship? Nothing! I love the space/universe approach, but what do I know? Nothing!

Come on. Someone knocks on your door, saying that he/she would be your partner, but - damn - he/she is in another body. Of course, 10 minutes later you would make love to him/her, right?

Yes, this is what we would like to see in science fiction! Yes, this is science fiction! Sex in the City on Destiny and Earth and vice versa - at the same time. Makes totally sense, right?

Good bye Stargate Universe - you are on the same road then Babylon 5 Crusade. Boring, uninvolving and now also even off topic!

Which I hated as well. Slow moving plot. Too much
jumping from one character to many others. No big story to fill an hour from beginning to end.
Also the style of 'Lost' etc. A SciFi soap opera.
I predict very soon failure.
The screen play writers ran out of inspiration on the 9-th season of SG1, when Rick Anderson quit the show. They ran out of inspiration on season 4 of Atlantis, when they kicked out the best inspiring feminist female character of Dr. Elizabeth Weir.
I hope one day a new good SciFi writer will rise again, for the sake of us SciFi intelligent GEEKS :)

The landscape is bleak right now in good Sci Fi. I do not want to take a chance on one the broadcast network Sci Fi Shows.. They all get killed as soon as you get hooked or it gets interesting...

Shows I enjoyed, like Firefly, Terminator, Eli Stone, My Own Worst Enemy, etc.. get killed as soon as they find their stride. I now DVR everything, wait to see if it gets picked up and Then watch it. I have all of the new shows in storage awaiting the sign from the networks to see if getting hooked on a show will be a good thing or another disappointment.

SyFi (or what ever they call them selves this week) and USA at least will commit to their shows. SGU and White Collar are both shows I watched from the 1st episode. This is because the networks are willing to commit to a full season which gives the show runner enough time to at least wrap the show up if something goes awry.

I have faith in the SG Franchise and it's leadership (well except for the last season of SG1).

This show is a huge disappointment. I thought Atlantis was too cheesy and light. I was hoping Universe would be serious and deep. Instead it's too slow and the characters are boring or annoying. I don't want all this soap opera crap. Character development is not who's sleeping with whom. Where's the SF? Where's the fallout for using the stones and taking advantage of another person's body?
Star Trek TNG and SGU
Posted by Scott on November 27th, 8:15am
At this point I am keeping an open mind. I remember the first season of Star Trek TNG and felt that was very weak but it was also important in developing the storyline of what became a very successful and enjoyable series. One cannot compare SGU to the other SG series as this is a new concept, yes they have had a few hiccups and will probably have more but every new series has had problems of one type or another. Once they develope a stronger storyline which will take some time this will probably be a more enjoyable show. That being said I do agree that they do need to make some changes but I will continue to enjoy watching them stumble as they develope the story, at least for a while.
It's a whole new show

Everyone is to busy comparing SGU to SG1 and SGA. It's a new show and people need to understand this. Give it sometime to develop and stop comparing. I do like SGU i feel as if they are trying to dive into too many chars.

I really like Rush's character.....many seem to think he's too dark and boring but that's pretty realistic to me.....I enjoy everything other than the trips home.....I agree the soap opera stuff is pretty annoying, not even into Chloe's crap on Destiny.
I know with the show Lost, the character development went on and on and on showing their paths and SGU is doing the same thing. Hopefully it doesn't become the entire purpose for the show and once these people's characters are built up, they can move forward. I do wish they'd ditch Lou though. He is competetive to Rush and they don't need 2 of the same character.

As someone who's watched SG-1 and SG-A all the seasons, I can say this is the WORST stargate ever.
What's with the earth nonsense.. just sounds like they're trying match what BSG had with the caprica storyline and baltar's hallucinations.
Total nonsense.
They should stick to the ship... Throw in escaped prisoners, robots, the ori, etc and you'll keep us watching.. for now I'm gone.
Episode 9, Life.. was the last straw!
Lesbians.. come on! Lesbians... in stargate.. are you serious???
Not that i have anything against them just that stargate is supposed to be about wormholes.. blowing up sun's etc.... Not pointless drama with lesbians we don't even know.. or even care about.
Can this show Now.

Posted by Gleebo on November 27th, 5:07am
Im really struggling to continue watching this but I probably will. The show would be just fine as another SciFi series as someone else stated "from the creators of SG-1 and SGA" would probably given it a solid built in fan base. Calling it Stargate Universe is just the beginning of what doesn't work for the show for me.

The title SGU almost contradicts the premise of the show entirely. When you think of "Universe" you get a feeling that it is some gigantic all inclusive sci-fi world that the crew should be zipping around making discoveries and running into a vast array of other planets, civilizations, and creatures.

Instead it is people basically 'stuck' in an ancient space ship that they barely have a clue how to even survive in let alone go in a specific direction or destination. Occasionally they slow down enough to go check out a planet for resources but even then its only for a short amount of time. There is no time to explore or attempt to find help before they have to make a miraculous 'just in the nick of time' return back to the Destiny.

The creators didn't learn their lesson from the beginning of Atlantis. To make the situation seem so dire they think that the people need to be cut off from Earth and worried that they will never return. It didn't take too long before Atlantis was just a Mitch Pileggi space bus trip away if they needed it.

The communication stones are a novel and neat idea but seriously... Daniel Jackson or Rodney McKay would have figured out how to use those things to transport their physical bodies back and forth between Stargate Command and the Destiny on the back of a napkin over lunch. Hell, with Sam Carter's penchant for asspulls she probably would have accidentally figured out a way to use the stones to transport entire planets.

If they wanna keep them cut off, fine go ahead but at least make us care about someone on the ship besides Eli. The humor and lightheartedness were elements that made the previous 2 series so likeable even if there were times when the story lines blew (the Ori!!, Teyla episodes). So far only Eli has a sense of humor and even when he does it seems like Rush or Young is right there to snuff it out before it spreads to other characters.

I could go on and on about what I don't like about SGU but im sure its very similar to what most others on here think.

Honestly, im even pissed about the fact that there is no opening themesong/credits. Most new shows go without but part of the fun with SG1 and Atlantis was watching the opening credits each season to see what changed and who was getting 'main character' billing. The SGU logo for a half second or so is about as dull as a table lamp.
Was Ready for Dark and Brooding, however....
Posted by valleygal on November 27th, 4:37am
I was open to a dark, brooding, character driven, more realistic SGU, but this series is simply poorly written. I haven't seen any development and I could care less about the characters. It's boring the heck out of me and I decided to stop watching it after "Life." I guess I'm not the only person!

I completely agree with your review. SGU is not Stargate for me. I have been bored to death and "Life" was the final straw. I've gotten to the stage where I really can't stand any of these characters. They are so unlikeable and boring that I now couldnt care less what happens to them. Even if the show picks up action wise I'm done because I have no interest in this cast. I've loved both of the previous SG casts and was glued to the TV each week, now I could fast forward through most of the episodes. The only thing that would get me to watch SGU is if they got rid of all the present cast and replaced them with the SGA cast. They could all mysteriously disappear and Shep and team and sent to look for them, now that would get me watching again.

I have been an avid fan of Stargate SG1 and Atlantis, but this new soap opera type format is not working as there is not enough science fiction involved, I am bored with the continual trips to earth and I don't really care enough about the characters because they are so poorly written and acted. The series is so, so downbeat and depressing that I have stopped watching and unless it improves I will not restart. Using the franchise label of Stargate will not keep people watching this dull as ditchwater drivel because we expect more from a stargate program. Stargate Universe fails to deliver: action, fun, science, fiction and decent characters!

I too have given up on SGU. I lasted 4 episodes, and because I really didn't like or care about the characters, I voted with my remote, and haven't tuned in since.

I loved SG1 and SGA. The sense of adventure, fun and the friendship entertained me. On SGU, I dislike all the characters and wouldn't care if they were all thrown out of the airlock. When I feel like that about the characters, it's time to move on.

It's not Stargate, no. It's also not a show I want to watch. Brad Wright and co lost this dedicated Stargate fan. But, I don't think they were interested in hooking me anyway. Wrong demographic....

Where are the Wraith and the Replicators when you need them? This time around, I would be rooting for THEM!

Last episode was absolutely dreadful and the whole forced drama between Young and Lou Diamond Phillips is horrible. They're acting like teenagers when all you would think Young needs to do is file a complaint against Telford and get him kicked off the program. Of course that won't happen because the writers want it to drag on until Telford inevitably screws Youngs wife. Not interested, thanks.

My wife & I agreed to discontinue watching this. We bought many seasons of SG-1 and all of Atlantis. The endless personal reflections to the sphere & the home visit struggles are simply boring. The poison water & timeloop episode had some good moments.
The last straw was the lesbian relationship that was highlighted. We have constantly felt this is unhealthy behavior, despite the outcry of PC maniacs.
We'll look for the next Science Fiction offering-- hopefully not another social engineering soapbox.
Get it together

Agree with the majority. SGU is heading nowhere fast. I keep watching and keep hoping to see a purpose to it all. But there just isn't one. SGU so far has just been a bunch of sad sucks stuck on a super awesome ship, eating super lame food, complaining about the super lame company, and waiting for their day off to take a turn to ride the stones home. Eff that.

Wright...Cooper...if you read this. Dig into Rush's Past, make him a protagonist we can cheer for, Give him some of the ships toys to play with, Give Eli a gun, a purpose, a secret mission (besides spying on Rush), heck, give the fat kid a super power. He's our eyes and ears into an adventure. "Danielfy" him (super geek turned super stud in 4 or 5 seasons) The least you could do is get the kid laid. I think we need less time on Earth, more time time kickin' the universes' ars. Go check out some more planets, meet some locals, try their version of 'curry'.

Get it together guys, I'm giving you a few more weeks, but if something awesome doesn't happen soon expect sh!t ratings and an early cancellation!

I have been a Stargate fan since the movie. Love it. This show is a shadow of the series and closer to the way the movie seemed to play out. I'm on the fence about SG-U. I think I prefer the story lines that are closer to SG-1 and Atlantis for normal weekly shows and going dark and sinister for effect when needed on occasion.

I'm giving it till the end of the full season then I'm gone if it does not start shaping up.
You still have some time

I look back at the first episodes of Star Trek and see some very poor stories and characters. Same thing with Next Gen, SG and SG-Alantis. It took some time to develop the characters and story lines.

There is lot of potential in the story line for SGU but as many say, it is time for the characters to gel, work together against outside foes and to generate a purpose.
I love Stargate...but not SGU

I happen to agree with everything that Michael Simpson said. I am a huge fan of both SG-1 and Atlantis, and the elements that made me fall in love with them aren't in SGU. I htink "Life" was my last SGU episode as well.

I'd say the lack of azgard or asgard(not really sure) would be due to the fact that they committed complete species suicide during SG-1's series finale. But that's just my take.

Everyone's right. Bottom line, the other Stargates were fun and that's why people tuned in. This show, barring 'Time'(to a certain extent) isn't fun.
Dull
Posted by Mike Jones on November 26th, 6:48pm
This is the worst Stargate Series I have seen. I had recorded them on my PVR and I swear I had to forward a bunch of it. Its just too dull. Like that one alien they showed which was some sort of mistish that was attacking their water. It was so boring. I agree with you others too, why are they taking us to earth every week to bore us to death. Like when the bloody ship drops out of hyper space it should dial other planets and they should meet new socities and people. Its like in the whole universe there are no more people or weird looking aliens. Show me even klingons or romulins I dont care. Show me something at least.
And how come when these idiots visit earth basically every day, theres no azgard or other race of aliens from the other two shows helping them out or giving them suggestions.

Truely a waste.
3 points of fail
Posted by carl on November 26th, 5:18pm
(1) There is no humor

(2) Even the people who would normally act like this tend to help each other in crisis, this runs like a bad "Survivor" episode

(3) The ship is going no where in particular. So is the plot. And so are the characters' lives.
piss-poor writing
Posted by Vadim on November 26th, 2:29pm
For a character/drama driven show SGU fails miserably in making the characters engaging. Sure we see them being miserable & unhappy, gain tidbits of their pasts & relationships, unfortunately SGU fails to make us care one way or another (short of "kill Chloe already" outbursts). Failure to make the viewer emotionally involved in the fate of the character is not about style or genre (melodramas & reality shows pull this feat off all the time), it's about piss-poor writing. And so we end up with a show that is all about the characters that writers failed to make interesting & engaging, drama that feels immature, artificial and forced, no plot to speak off, no direction, no sense of awe or Sci-Fi & no humor. But hey, at least it's Stargate, right?
p.s. I was at one point struck by similarities & differences between SGU & Defying Gravity. Both are character-driven dramas set in a Sci-Fi setting. Both extensively use flashbacks, "personal interviews" and rather active love-life, socially controversial subjects. Yet, unlike with SGU, after the very first episode of DG I found myself emotionally invested with the characters, looking forward to discovering what will happen to them next.

I too am a little dissapointed with. What I look for in a sci fi series is excitement and a cast that you care about when you get to know them, I haven't seen much of this yet.
However, there have been a few promising moments and I think a lot of thought has gone into the characters, it is just taking too long for thier stories to come out for the viewers to bond with them.
Having said all that I am not ready to ditch yet, mainly because I am a big SG fan I just hope things pick up pace soon, after all, shows are re-comissioned on ratings.
Old Fan

It's funny that SGU has caused such grief amongst old fans of the series (including me), that we actually care to write about it.

I stopped watching SGU 4 episodes in due to , of course, that soapy nonsense and the utter lack of sci-fi .. just like other old fans did.

What irks me (and other old fans) to no-end is the following question: Why did they have to brand this 'show' as a Stargate series?

Couldn't they have easily called it something else instead???

They would have had the same ratings because the show would have been marketed as : "From the makers of Stargate SG1 and Atlantis ..."

That big ancient ship could have been any ol ship. They don't need a stargate because if the ship jumps out of hyper-space , then a shuttle could be used to explore nearby planets.

See what I mean?? It's a soap in space, it's not Stargate.

That's why so many 'old' fans are bothered by SGU .. because it's NOT STARGATE.

That's also why the same ticked off fans will continue to rant about it until the show goes off the air, or changes direction to include more action and sci-fi.

Keep a bit of drama, FINE, but give us an enemy to shoot at and some technology to explore.

Gawd!!!

SG1 and SGA was entertaining.... they kept me glued to the screen the whole time they were on.... SGU? Well, it took me 3 attempts to watch the premiere and 2 attempts to watch episodes 2 and 3....each time I fell asleep. Will I keep watching? Only if i need a cure for insomnia!

It's a shame too as I loved the franchise...

Personally, I wish they'd gone with S6 of SGA and the SG1 movie!
Pushing the Stargate Franchise from adventure to oblivion

What a disappointment. The thrill of watching the outer space voyages on Stargate filled with adventure and depth of characters has degenerated into the thrill of filling TV space with voyeurism void of any character.
Lessons

If you recall Star Trek tried this Story with out an adversary. It worked with Voyage Home, but Failed in The Motion Picture. I am afraid that good story telling whether Sci Fi or Just Action Adventure or Fantasy for that matter needs a good enemy, Something to connect our unlikely band of hero's, something to make them forget there differences.

That adversary doesn't have to be a Wraith or Klingon kind of character, it can be a virus look at the episode "Time" great stuff. thoughtful exciting and real suspense.

Science Fictions strength is its ability to tell stories that can teach us a little something about human nature, whether that is a moral story or an adventure.

So come on writers, producers lets find something amazing on the ship, lets find out that one of the seeded planets is now looking to destroy the Destiny for destroying its ecosystem or something. Lets see these people connect and become a team, lets remember that this is about the impossible not the inevitable.

I don't mind, if there are people, who like this kind of soap-opera. And the ratings could be exploding for all I know. I actually would expect this to happen, because there are much more people who like cheesy soap operas, then there are sci-fi fans.

The main problem with this show is in my opinion it's name: "Stargate". The all positive associations I had with this franchise are all gone now. What the producers are actually telling me is: "Screw you computer guy! Throw away the Stargate-cup you have at home. Housewives are our new target audience."

If on the other hand, the name of the show was not "Stargate" but "People in Space", then I still wouldn't watch it, but I also wouldn't care.

I just finished watching "Life" and part way through the episode I realized that I just didn't care about this show or its characters. SG1 and SGA were wonderfully written show and generally clever and action packed plots. In fact it seems that there was so much possibility for action that the writers had to make room for a bit of character development. Not so in SGU.

This show is nothing more than a space opera. Frankly, I don't want to see people hopping in and out of bed in a Sci Fi show. I have a son who also loves the Stargate 'world', but this is nothing that I would let him watch. Sex, homosexuality, interpersonal bickering -- I'm not a fan. Some may love this kind of thing, but my guess is that the audience is largely going to tune out and within the next season the plug will be pulled.

If you are going to do a Stargate series, remember your roots, remember what worked, and please . . . use the stargate.

I like it. It's differnt. I dosent have to fit with the other stargates there were differnt crews and differnt mission. Why can't this just be considered SG2 team or some junk like that? I can't say its the best show I've watched in the past few weeks but it seems like with how little detail there is in each show the writers are looking to make a long series out of it. I for one want to see it continue for a very long time.

Would be nice to see a little more action and not so much in your face soap junk. It's a tad to close to reality TV shows to much griping not enough fighting or things blowing up...
Star Gate: who cares

A bunch of bickering children slipping around in space. Not one character I give a whip about, maybe they all die and a new crew gets aboard...... please

No Action....... nothing

Who cares?

After partial amusement from "Time," I took one look at the previews of "Life" and decided to stop watching.

This past weekend, some friends and I gave "Children of the Gods" a spin, and remembered why bombast, camp, and levity delighted people for ten years.

I tried to like Stargate Universe. The first couple of episodes were pretty good but nothing else has happened. The writers are completely without imagination. They have the entire Universe from which to draw ideas and yet every week they're on earth boring us to death. My knowledge of Astronomy is pretty limited but at least I would have taken the crew to Mars, Jupiter, saturn or ANYPLACE other than EARTH EVERY WEEK.

The episodes for the last three weeks have been too boring to watch. What a waste of potential.
Hmmm
Posted by John on November 25th, 7:10pm
Yup. 'Life' left me wanting just the back. That hour I'd wasted. I learned next to nothing about anybody even though it was a 'psychiatrist' episode. I did laugh at the end when Young attacked Telford even though it was overly predictable.

I dislike many aspects of the show like the lack of shooting at aliens or the lack of shooting at aliens or the lack of shooting at each other. A big part of watching stargate was well the fun of shoot'em'ups and the quips(mostly from Richard Dean Anderson) that made me smile and believe in the adventure as four people yet again took down rank after rank of Jaffa. Or later when Mr. Fanigan and all did the same with the Wraith. Of course SGU is trying to be like BSG and while BSG episodes could be great and gripping as the colonial survivors interacted with one another the cylons always came back and lightened the show to the extent that it was again an adventure and again forced the survivors to put aside their differences and band together. Sadly, SGU doesn't have that uniting force which was trademark of the last two series.

And while Robert Carlyle may be one of the few reasons to still flick over to Space or Sci-Fi to watch SGU, SGU did one thing well enough for me to give them the benefit of the doubt until the end of the season. That was their episode 'Time'.

Anyone remember the end of SG-1, season 8, when they went to Egypt to steal a ZPM from Ra? That 2 episode arc was horrible. They butchered time travel and left wishing those weird aliens in premiere of season 4 of Enterprise had won the temporal cold war and destroyed everything so I didn't have to ponder what happened. But 'Time' did a great job of time travel. Sure, I had to consider the timeline and got a little confused but the episode made a concise, fun and in my opinion great time travel episode which is by no way easy when you see the number of failed attempted in next to every sci-fi show. Not to mention we did delve into Eli's backstory and got to see his reaction to the loss of a loved one. And while the end result may have erased what Eli did and revealed I didn't feel robbed like in a dream episode as what we learned still exists within his character.

Maybe that's be infusing my hope that SGU won't fail like season 9 & 10 of SG-1. But if I was going to reference one episode thus far as a reason to give the show another chance it'd be 'Time'.
Fair enough

There's no question that the series seems to have its advocates. It will be interesting to track how the show does for the rest of the season.

To each their own.
