Big, Bad Bruce Campbell
The B-Movie star and friends talk 'Burn Notice' at Comic-Con

Bruce Campbell answered the question so many were wondering. Why is there a Burn Notice panel taking place at Comic-Con?"Why is a spy show being paraded in front of all the freaks and geeks?" he asked. "Why? Science fiction, fantasy and horror. Horror: My character's name is Sam Axe. Science fiction: If you've ever been to Miami you'll know there's lots of aliens there. Fantasy: My character Sam Axe sleeps with a string of rich Miami women and that's a fantasy to me."
Regardless, it was clear that the audience assembled were appreciative of the chance to celebrate the show, and it quickly became clear that this was to be the Bruce Campbell show.
After, of course, the applause for Michael Shanks, the surprise moderator of the panel, died down a bit.
Campbell was joined on stage by creator and exec producer Matt Nix, writer and producer Alfredo Barrios Jr., and cast members Ben Shenkman (Strickler), Jay Karnes (Brennan) and Seth Peterson (Nate Westen).
Shanks got things rolling with a few questions.
Question for Matt Nix: What can you tell us about Michael and Nate's father?
Nix: Michael's father did not burn him. The point of the father — and the point of having a spy show where the spy is seen interacting with the family at all — is where do these people come from and what has prepared them for their job. The father is dead. There's no reconciliation to be had there.
Question for Bruce Campbell: What are the most Bruce Campbell aspects of Sam Axe's personality? What are the least?
Campbell: Where did this come from? The Internet? That's a really good question. Most like: I wear these stupid shirts even if I wasn't on the show. I shell out $120 for Tommy Bahama for no good reason. The least? My wife doesn't let me sleep with rich Miami women.
Question for Jay Karnes: What makes Brennan such a formidable foe?
Karnes: He doesn't believe anything Westen tells him, even if Westen is telling him the truth. My pitch is having Brennan come back as the client, not the villain.
Question for Ben Shenkman: Tell us more about Strickler.
Shenkman: One of the things that he enjoyed about Michael was that he was able to smooth talk people into doing something they didn't want to or was not in their best interest and he wanted a character who could do that to Michael.
In answering questions from the audience, Campbell handed out cash three times. He joked that there was a Xena and a Pikachu in the audience he wanted to "boff".
When asked if Sam Axe would ever settle down? "Why would he? He's still putting the hammer down."
Campbell mentioned that Nix won't allow digital explosions because he liked to "blow shit up".
Nix went on to explain how in a recent episode the plan was to perform a simulated explosion to blow out the windows of a house, but the explosion was a bit bigger than was expected. "We simulated an explosion that knocked the house off its foundation, and cracked an exterior wall in two and knocked out a dozen windows across the street," said a giggling Nix.
"The way the show works is Bruce calls us up and tells us what to do, and we do it," said Nix.
In a sequence of clips from the third season's final episodes, it seems as though there is going to be some movement on Michael Westen's burn notice. Maybe by the end of the season he'll be close to being back in the game.
Burn Notice at Comic-Con? Sure. The event was a raucous, raging success. And funny too.
